  • avoid alliances and taking sides
  • everyone is responsible for making sure all participants have an opportunity to be involved
Respectful Listening Involves:
  • listening to someone's words without trying trying to think of what you want to say but instead trying to understand fully what they are communicating
  • asking questions about what others are saying
  • making eye contact and maintaining focus on their words
  • refraining from side conversations 
  • being mindful of facial expressions and body language
  • HINT: if you're struggling to concentrate try repeating back to yourself what they are saying or summarizing it in your head
Respectful Speaking Looks Like:
  • taking turns
  • acknowledging what others have said before you
  • being respectful of everyone's time
  • inviting those who haven't had a chance to speak to comment
  • agreeing or disagreeing with statements and not people
  • speaking to the group
Active Participation Includes:
  • asking questions
  • making references to the passage
  • supporting your opinions or statements with text
  • making connections between life and the reading
  • reflecting on others' words and your own engagement in the seminar
