One of my favorite YA novels of all time, this is the first book in a trilogy. Through diary entries, a young teen tells the story of a changing Earth. When the moon is knocked closer to Earth by a meteor, people are not quite sure what to do. Seasons change, tides shift, food becomes scarce. A classic novel, and one of my favorites growing up. This story follows Winnie Foster as she becomes a part of the world of the Tucks. The Tucks are immortal due to special water from a spring in Winnie's woods, so they cannot die. This novel is technically a prequel to Practical Magic (which is both an excellent movie and novel), but Rules of Magic works well as a standalone. The story follows three magical children, Frances, Vincent, and Jet. They are all different and special in their own way. They spend the majority of the book trying to find themselves and their place in a world that is not so tolerant of differences. I think this is perfect for the classroom because of the intense discussion about anxiety and mental illness, which so many teens struggle with. The story follows Aza, a girl with OCD and anxiety, who is just trying to navigate love and life on her own terms, without letting her illnesses get in her way.
