One thing I love about helping readers find books is when we find that book! I'm always very happy and pleased when I can sift through their words and thoughts to find a book to recommend. I always ask them to read the inside flap or back cover. When they like what they've read and decide to check it out, they're always very thankful for the assistance and that makes me feel accomplished.

At the start of a Reader's Advisory conversation, I'm always concerned that I won't have the right answer. There are plenty of authors and subjects I, myself, don't prefer to read and if someone is looking for one of those, my knowledge level is minimal. I hope to expand my knowledge as much as I can so I can feel more confident about helping in subject areas I'm not very familiar with.

My favorite part of readers advisory is when a patron is able to find a book that they really love. It's awesome when they return and let you know that they enjoyed the book and are there looking for other books in that same series or by that author.

However I always find readers advisory challenging, particularly because my reading tastes don't always line up with those of my patron base. I also feel like I don't read as quickly as others so my catalog of current books that I've read isn't as robust as others. I try to keep current with popular authors and genres though, and I'm hoping this course helps me find some new readers advisory techniques.

I love talking about books, so that is an easy love. It's so fun to dive in to reading interests--what excites us and what makes us cringe. Most folks I've encountered are very passionate about their likes and dislikes. I love to puzzle out what they will want to read next. The greatest challenge for me is when the person does not know their likes/dislikes and just wants a recommendation without any stipulations. It makes the puzzle much harder to solve when they give you nothing to go on!

I love connecting people to their new favorite book. I recently helped a woman find a book and she came back in a few weeks later and thanked me. She was so appreciative of my help and then went on to check out other books by that author. It is the little moments like that that are awesome! One of the challenges is finding the right book for a picky reader, especially when they read wayyy outside of my comfort zone. In those instances I have to learn to rely on RA tools instead of my own knowledge which can be daunting as I can't give it my own stamp of approval.

Something that I always enjoy about readers' advisory questions is letting the person asking for help just talk to someone about books. After asking a question to a complete stranger, it's both exciting and a relief to know the listener is invested in helping you and allowing you talk about your interests openly.

My most common challenge is, no matter how detailed a lexicon the industry creates, everyone has different ways of articulating and interpreting the same ideas. Sometimes this is driven by simple miscommunication, but others comes from popular terms surfacing through social tends and current events that don't have a perfect match to the language used in our databases. We are smart enough to connect the dots, but it does add delay every so often.

One thing I like is being able to find the right books for my home library clients. A dislike is the nuances within categories eg. cozy mysteries and thrillers. It may seem obvious but everyone has their own point at which the categories cross over.

I especially enjoy connecting a child or early teen to a reading material that is of interest to them, especially if reading isn't their thing. This is because I feel public libraries cater more to adults and toddlers, not only in reading materials but also in programs. This isn't a negative observation, I feel it is because it is easier to cater to these age groups needs. It is a bit harder to get primary kids, teens and young adults interested. Of course this won't be everyone's thoughts, these are my own opinions.

A challenge for me is finding a graphic novel, or perhaps an audio book for a primary school child, or teenager to have the parent insist that isn't really reading.

I typically love the interview process but I d find it challenging when the patron does not have an answer to several questions. It can make it feel like guesswork instead of being able to find a title they really want to read. Usually, it is a very positive experience to help a patron find a new author to love or genre to explore.

I love being able to potentially change a reader's point of view with a book recommendation, knowing that you have the ability to affect someone in that way is a big thing. I find it challenging when I can't get them to read anything at all, i.e. when I mention a book and say "give it 4 chapters, see how you go" and they don't want to take you up on that challenge.
One thing I love about helping readers find books is the moment their face lights up when you recommend something that truly resonates with them — it’s incredibly rewarding to connect someone with a story that excites or moves them. One thing I find challenging is when a reader isn’t quite sure what they’re looking for or has trouble articulating their preferences, which can make it harder to find the perfect match — but even then, it becomes a fun puzzle to solve together.

I really enjoy being able to recommend books and help readers find exactly what they’re looking for. However, I find it challenging at times—especially when working with kids. Sometimes a patron is searching for a very specific book, and if I’m unable to locate it, I try suggesting similar titles within the same genre. When those alternatives don’t appeal to them, I can quickly run out of ideas, which can be frustrating.

Making a connection between a book and a reader is an amazing feeling of accomplishment. It is even better when they take the time to have a conversation with you about their likes/dislikes and allow you to guide them toward several titles. It can be challenging when they only have a minute and just want a book placed in their hands (especially 3 minutes before closing!)

I love seeing the excitement and joy on someone's face when they have connected with a book. I feel challenged when that person is looking for something in a genre or subject I don't know much about.

I love when, we build a rapport on books that we've both enjoyed. As well as learning about new stories or author from a patron.

I love the excitement that readers get when you help them find a new book or series that interests them. No matter their age, when a patron is excited about a book I've recommended, it never fails to bring me joy. It's an amazing feeling to work with a reader to find a new book that suits them well.

The part of recommending books that I find most challenging is honestly availability of materials. I get a lot of patrons who want to go home with a book that day, so finding one that fits their interests that is also physically (or digitally!) available that day can be a real struggle! I want the readers I help to go home with something they can enjoy, and it can be frustrating to find great options that aren't immediately available.
