One key way to accomplish this is to root the instruction in real world application. Want your students to care about math? Explain how it can make them rich! Introduce compound interest. Explain tax rates, FICA, APR, etc. Want them to care about writing solid paragraphs? Show them cringey emails that resulted in people getting fired. Show them tweets that are riddled with misspellings and grammar errors and explain how it reveals the writer's ignorance. Explore successful advertisement campaign slogans and analyze why they worked.

The bottom line is to connect your content and instruction to real-world examples, especially if those examples are pulled from topics that already interest your students.

Classroom management has been (and I believe will continue to be) one of my biggest challenges. It stems partly from my nature, which is to be goofy, light hearted, and  kind. For some students, that is the perfect nature. We’re able to explore topics in a manner which they’ve never been able to before. They’re free to have fun with it and to push their analytical and critical thinking skills, while also enjoying their time exploring the content and interacting with their peers  and their teacher. However, for other students, this nature is an invitation for chaos. It is a de facto acceptance of misbehavior. It’s as if they think, Oh, this guy is cool. Let’s have fun in here. And then immediately chuck a pencil at their buddy across the room.

Managing these different student behavior types is difficult and requires me to be flexible with my nature. In some classes I can be that light-hearted, goofy guy. In others, I must be firm and resist my temptations to be silly. It’s about “reading the room” and adjusting my behavior accordingly.

This is a big one and it isn't just about burnout for teachers but it is one of the biggest hurdles within education.  Some may disagree but I have talked to people in other communities and grade levels and they have experienced it as well.  It is student behavior.  It causes so much stress on the teacher because it isn't one or two students but you will have possibly half the class that are behavior issues and that is for one class.  Then you have to deal with phone calls, and I should say multiple phone calls, to parents which generally if it makes a change it is only temporary. In our school, the principals were so busy dealing with violent behavior that they said to deal with everything else ourselves.  So no support from admin.  There is so much sympathy for the students and the lives that they are living that we are enabling them to grow up to not respect authority or that they are responsible for following rules and regulation, laws when they grow up.    These kiddos steal the education from their classmates because so much time is spent on behavior that the teacher can't continue with the lesson because of the behavior.  This is a great factor in burnout because you can only do something that is failing and causing so much trauma for so long before you are dead inside.  But yet, my heart is filled with love for those that bloom in the rocky soil. We are expected to turn documents in to admin on that we ourselves received with short notice. We are expected to stay back to help students who need more assistance. 

Truly, it's a wonder how so many of us still aspire to make sure we check all of the boxes. And for that I commend my fellow teachers.
