Taking place in the 1940s, the world fought to prevent the axis powers from taking over most of Europe. Although many talk about the great battles and sacrifices soldiers made, they mostly forget the people that suffered the most, the prisoners of war. Even though rules were made to prevent the mistreatment of prisoners, many countries ignored those rules and treated the prisoners horribly, leaving them with severe PTSD and trauma when they returned after the war. I believe the author wrote this to highlight what happens after the war and what happens to the prisoners. This poem talks about the struggles of PTSD and how the person feels trapped. This is the same as how the main character feels in unbroken after he is released from prison. This poem elevates the conversation about the book by considering what can happen after one is mistreated by a person in power.
