Ponyboy says "I was wrong" which shows things don't get better in the upcoming chapters, so maybe the Socs have something to do with it. I think this because Marcia and Cherry just left them for their boyfriends. Cherry says if she doesn't say hi, then Ponyboy shouldn't take it personally. I think this quote is significant because it shows that even if Ponyboy 'doesn't mean' to do something, Darry also uses the same excuse. It also shows that even though they fight, the gang would never hurt each other unless they didn't think it through or if it was on accident. It kind of shows that they worry about each other like family.They also fight so much that sometimes their "fighting instincts" take over. He was just angry, for he did it in the heat of the moment. Darry instantly felt regret, for he knew Ponyboy would react poorly which is probably why he seemed so shook after he did it. After the moment of silence, he realized how it would affect him. That shows that he knows him like family.
