Cyclone Monica was caused by warm, tropical sea temperatures and a bunch of thunderstorms. The water was over 27 degrees when the cyclone was formed.

Cyclone Monica affected many businesses in Cairns and Brisbane. Cyclone Monica also mildly affected Papua New Guinea. There were no fatalities reported in any of the areas impacted by the category 3 cyclone that formed on the 17th April 2006. The heavy rainfall and falling debris usually affects the reef in the North-east of Australia, but surprisingly that was not the case for Cyclone Monica. The damage cost $5.1 million. The Government of Australia provided around $25,000 for damaged business' and severely impacted areas. Farmers received $200,00 in loans for the next nine years. The Australian red cross and the salvation army have helped with many cyclones over the years.
