Hello everyone! First of all, thank you so very much for your interest and questions. I will try to answer your questions and be the most specific that I can.

Q1) Regarding the first question: The maternal and paternal depression has negative consequences for the development of their children and have a strong impact on their psychological health, quality of life due to the decreased maternal sensitivity and caregiving. Moreover, it also affect their interaction with their parents because women with depressive symptoms showed less closeness, warmth and sensitivity and a significantly lower level of mutual attunement (with regard to emotional availability). The accumulation of these elements creates an environment that is not conducive to the optimal development of a child. Significant research show that health of infants and children is intimately associated with the health of their mothers/fathers. Post-Natal Depression influence baby’s development on the social development plan: lower social engagement, behavioural development: increase in child behavioural problems, more mood disorders, more difficult temperament, communication problems, less mature regulatory behaviours, increase fear that increased behavioural inhibition, Breastfeeding: early interruption of excusive breastfeeding in the first month, Emotional development problem: anxiety, language development affected, cognitive development, motor development and sleep problem. These is a risk of maltreatment: higher risk for spanking their child compared with non depressed women.

Q2) Indeed it is important to consider various organisations, support services and health professionals who can support your mental health during pregnancy or after having a baby and for the family as well. If the suicidal or severely distressed parent has no adult family members or friends around to help, it is possible that the children may be taken into temporary local authority care in order for the parent to receive the urgent help that s/he needs.

Q3) • Talk.

• Have realistic expectations. You’re adjusting to having a baby, so don’t put pressure on yourself for everything to be perfect. Accept offers of help and ask the people around you to help with chores like cooking, shopping and housework.

• Make time for yourself. Let someone care for your baby while you have some ‘me time’.

• Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Be physically active every day, whether it's taking a walk with your baby or doing some other form of gentle exercise.

•Find a postnatal depression support group. Talking to other mums in a similar situation can be reassuring.

Q4) Because the symptoms of Post-Natal depression constitute a major depressive episode and are the same, it is the same presentation among men and women. Therefore, recommended treatments are the same for both sexes, which is the Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), such as sertraline that are recommended as first-line treatments.

Q5) As an osteopath I will of course consider how my five osteopathy models are affected, being even more conscious of the communication and listening part which is essential in this kind of case. In terms of treatment part, I will focus on more cranially and considering as well the sacrum: In people who have a depression, pregnant women especially, the sacrum is too much in flexion and therefore drag all the tissues towards the floor and affect the mental state straight away such as a feeling of heaviness. Focusing with cranial techniques on the mood of the patient, the anxiety and the movement and rythme on the body (dura mater).

Q6) Several voluntary organisations and charities that exists for supporting families and new parents:

Family Lives offers confidential support, information and advice for parents.

Home Start offers a service which pairs you with a volunteer who visits you to offer practical and emotional support.

Family Action offers specialist support services for parents with a mental health problem (services during pregnancy and after giving birth).

NCT courses for new parents.

The Association for Postnatal Illness (APNI) offers information and support about PND.

The Breastfeeding Network support about breastfeeding.
