in 1969, the free breakfast program in Seattle was established. It was modeled after California's, which served more kids than the state's places did. it gave many people food that couldnt get it otherwise, and pushed inititive for free lunch across the country. Union in Madrona was home to the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther party. The Madrona Elementary school had, and currently has, a Black Panther as its mascot. The Peaceable Kingdom of Madrona Statue has a pig, a wolf, a sheep, and a panther as a part of it. The pig symbolizes the cops, the panther symbolizes the Black Panthers, and the wolfs and sheep represent the members of the neighborhood and the tensions that exist.
