The Puritans

The Puritans were people who wanted to leave the practice of catholic religion and build on the ideas of John Calvin. They believed in total depravity which means that humankind is sinful trough the fall of Adam And Eve. Total depravity would then put into action the beliefs of predestination and limited atonement, predestination meaning that everyone is given a path by god, whether that path leads to heaven ( The Elect) or to hell (The Rejected). Limited atonement means that god only died for The Elect. The Puritans lives were all controlled by god which is why they made their community into a theocracy.

Causes of Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem

There were many reasons for the belief of witchcraft in Salem. With the Puritans there was a strong belief that Satan was acting in the world and that would cause fear and suspicion to the Puritans. The belief that caused all this was that Satan would recruit witches and have them do his work for him. The Puritans then went on to advance in the search for witches and would make certain symptoms the evidence that you are a witch, for example if you had a third nipple they would use that against you and say that you are a witch. Another reason for the belief in witches was that it was a time of troubles for the Puritans which made them believe there was some evil lurking.

During the witch belief in Salem, there were court trials that led to the determining of the sentence to those accused. To be brought to court all you had to be was accused, if a neighbor accused you of being a witch you were immediately brought to court and most likely sentenced to death if you did not admit. During the trials the judges would have the female witches strip to find body marks that proved she was a witch and for their own amusement. Ironically if you were accused of being a witch and you admitted it they let you live and sent you into the hands of god. All adults and even children were accused of being witches and were sent to court, most out comes were fatal.
