The story begins with Buck enjoying a life of leisure as Judge Miller's pet. As the Klondike Gold Rush gains popularity, Buck is kidnapped and sent to work as a sled dog. On his trip to the Yukon, Buck meets the Man in the Red Sweater, who gives Buck his first beating.

Francois and Perrault buy Buck and he begins his life as a sled dog. Amazed by uncivilized life in the Yukon, Buck meets Spitz, a cruel lead sled dog, and immediately despises him. Although it is a wild world, Buck really enjoys the work of the sled dogs.

After several failed attempts at a fight to the death, Buck and Spitz get their chance at the end of a lengthy rabbit chase. Although Spitz is an experienced fighter, Buck uses his creativity and kills the ferocious guide dog.

Event 3

Buck takes over as guide dog and is very successful. The equipment is sold to the Scots and they begin work on the difficult and exhausting mail route. They then sell them to Charles and Hal, prospectors who know nothing about sledding or the Yukon. The dogs need to rest, but the men refuse to waste time whipping and beating the dogs.

Event 4

The dogs begin to die and only five remain when they enter John Thornton's camp. Thornton tells the men that the ice on the trail is rotting, but Hal refuses to listen and punches Buck. Thornton knocks Hal down and threatens him. Hal leaves Buck and continues up the trail with the four remaining dogs. The ice gives way and dogs and humans fall to their deaths.

Event 5

Thornton nurses Buck back to health, and Buck responds with devotion and love. As the months go by, Buck finds it harder and harder to ignore the need to run free in the wild. Only Thornton's idea keeps Buck in camp. For a few days, Buck is out hunting in the wilderness when he senses something is wrong. He runs back to camp and finds the bodies of his fellow dogs along the way. When Buck arrives at the camp, the Yeehats, a local Indian tribe, dance and celebrate his attack. Buck pounces on the men without mercy, killing several and scattering the rest.

Event 6

After driving the tribe away, Buck smells Thornton. His trail leads to a bloody puddle, and Buck waddles through the puddle all day. As night falls, he returns to the woods and challenges a pack of wolves. Fighting the entire pack at once, Buck remains intact and is accepted as their leader. Buck lives out the rest of his life free in the desert.
