Why? Throughout my journey to getting a degree, women and feminism has always been something I have been interested in. Although so many creative practitioners already delved into this, it never feels overdone or outdated; every time a new project idea comes around, I learn so much more and discover so much about the journey women as a collective have been on to get to where we are, and even today our journey to end damaging perception of women continues.

Advertisement at its core means to promote or publicise something to someone. The key to advertising is to consider who your audience are and what will encourage them to consume whatever it is you want them to. However, for women’s products, women themselves haven’t always been the audience the adverts are made to appeal to.  Not only this, women have also been used as antagonists or even objects throughout the years to appeal to men.

• From this collage, I can see that it is mainly focused on woman that may be artist as the I can see something that says self portrait

• There’s also references to “boys” and a picture of a man tied up so this might be the power dynamic between women and men and especially focusing putting women in a position of power over men

• From what I can see the pictures all seemed to be ages a lot of big hair so might be based on the 70’s or 80’s it also seems to have people surrounded by there own pieces of art which is a cool way to intertwine stories.

This task was really useful because my peer understood what my moodpboard was communicating which meant that I knew I was heading in the right direction.

• “I very deeply wanted to be accepted by my friends and my parents but my needs to persist as an artist created a barrier between me and the people i grew up with”

• She met Pollock, her idol, and he treated her differently to perhaps a male student, “certainly not in a sexist way” but at the time “in those abstract expressionist days men has to prove their masculinity”

• Interviewer asked if women were treated like sex objects, her response was “Yes they were. And unless they played the game they were not allowed into the inner circle”

• When asked about if women committing to becoming professional artists were taken seriously, she responded “absolutely not. I don't know any young students who were.”

Similarly to the PGAC report card I looked at earlier in the project, it would be interesting to work towards visualizing a comparison, potentially a humorous, ironic one, between how the media represented women in the 20th century compared to the 21st.

• C.N. It's interesting that the figures you have been doing for the last few years are all men.

• N.G. Whenever I wanted to say something specific, personal, to the effect that I am a woman, I would use a woman's image if the work were figurative. It seemed natural. But if I wanted to say something in general, I would use a man. It's as if man was our society. Yet I don't feel that the male forms are outside of me. I don't feel I have to conform to a political identification although, naturally, I'm a feminist.

• But if we have to split hairs, I'm a humanist.

• C.N. That's what feminism is all about--being treated like a human being.

• N.G. I've always had"a tremendous problem fulfilling the perscrip-tion for being a woman with a capital W. But my heart always went out to the men too and the pressures they have felt. I have known the

• most macho men, the biggest phonies, the biggest latent homosexuals but also, happily for me, I have also known very gentle, feeling, human men. I have been both very unlucky and very lucky in that. I could never honestly slice the cake one way and say, "This is how it is, red on this side, black on that side." C.N. But it's men you tied up.

• N.G. Yes, they are men. On the other hand, I use the word figure. Even when you tried to dissect the things that look like machine parts. I always said these are figures too.

My magazine website will have articles, prints and a shop, all around real events and women artists from the 70s. I am taking visual inspiration from Nan Goldin, Lorna Simpson and Polyester Magazine, and using my dissertation research for the contextual references.

I really wanted the play on the Mad Men era to be as clear as possible, so I ensured the celebration of women was clear through all aspects, from the articles, to the events bringing women together, to even choosing fonts designed by women.

If given more time, I would have loved to try to go to a screen printing workshop to print my designs onto a tote bag or some t-shirts to bring my shop to life. I could have then taken some photographs with models styling or wearing my items to put onto my website and Instagram page. This also would have been a good opportunity for me to make some more physical and experimental work since most of this project has been digital.
