Emotional pain is one of the most leading caues of depression. Being depressed could cause individuals to participate in series of dentrimental events such as abusive behavior, drugs, and in extreme cases suicide; depression is making them feel unworthy of anything they have set for their future. Having this type of emotional struggle that does not have a specific time limit to which it will all end, will cause anyone to do anything to make the feeling disappear, even if it means ending thier own life. 

     Futhermore, emotional agony not only leads to self harm, but also can cause one to be unconnect with their love ones. Having the guidence of your family is very important for help you could recieve. Not being able to communicate with could take a major toll on someones life and lead them into depression as well. Although there are therpaist who could help the matter, it would not be the same because it is not coming from someone they can truly trust.

     Overall, emotional pain is tougher to overcome becuase of the negative effects that can last for a life time. From varies of negative outcomes to the creation to the physcial pain, emotional pain is far worse. Though physcial pain has it's list of negative affects it comes nothing close to what emotional pain has to offer. 

     Throughout history, individuals have been denying basic human rights by starvation, which eventually leads to dehumanization. For example, in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, the Germans begrudgingly gave the Jews two rations of soup and bread a day. The texts read, “DAYS WENT BY. In the mornings: black coffee. At midday: soup. By the third day, I was eagerly eating any kind of soup…At six o’clock in the afternoon: roll call. Followed by bread with something. At nine o’clock: bedtime” (Wiesel 43). The SS Officers did not give the Jews much food, during the day, and when they did it was an imperceptible amount, if not that, none at all. Once the SS Officers began starving the Jews, that is when they started denying basic human rights by not allowing them to have a proper meal. This group of people (Jews) going through starvation is something that they are being forced to do, which cause them to become dehumanized. People have been starved and dehumanized in a variety of places, such Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, this situation is brought up on starvation. Conrad also known as Marlow, was a bystander for Africans, as Mr. Kurtz, the captain, starved the Africans until they were very poor. Heart of Darkness excerpt 3 explains, “I could see every rib, the joints of their limbs were like knots in a rope” (Conrad). Because Mr. Kurtz was captain no one was allowed to say anything about his actions including Marlow. Mr. Kurtz dehumanized the Africans by not allowing them fest while he held them captive and forced them to work.

Second, in literature, individuals have been stripped of individuality by objectifying one’s self which also led to dehumanization. For example, in the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Marlow has seen the Africans as animals and savages since in the beginning when he first saw them. The text mentions, “They passed me within six inches, without a glance, with that complete, deathlike indifference or unhappy savages” (Conrad). The Africans did not look at Marlow, but they had the look of death on their face of uncivilized creatures. Speaking up on the Africans as being savages because of the expressions on their faces is part of how Marlow objectifies them. This group people (Africans) going through the situation of Marlow talking down on them is dehumanizing because it is something they have no control of. Individuals have been dehumanized and objectified in numerous places, such as sex trafficking in Houston, Texas. For example, in the article, “ABC 13” by Art Rascon, explains to us that sex trafficking is growing as an industry and sees these women as just body parts like they appear to be. Rascon states, “On any given night, there are thousands of women and children enslaved in the growing sex trafficking industry. And sadly, Houston has become an international hub” (Rascon). Large numbers in sex trafficking business are continuously growing and Houston is one of the primary resources. These business are dehumanizing these women and children by their bodies for the companies own benefits.

Third, in the past years, dehumanization has been increasing in the amount of torture and cruelty of individuals categorized in a specific group. For example, in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, describes in various of ways how the German’s were torturing the Jew’s. In the book it read, “One day when Idek was venting his fury, I happened to cross his path. He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again, crushing me with ever more violent blows, until I was covered with blood. As I bit my lips in order not to howl with pain, he must have mistaken my silence for defiance and so he continued to hit me harder and harder” (Wiesel 53). Idek, (The Kapo), felt the need to beat Wiesel for no apparent reason and continued to beat him senseless as he assumes that Wiesel was disobeying him for not yelling while he was getting beaten. Idek shows no remorse as he does what he pleases to the Jew’s because there is absolutely nothing they can do about it. The individuals in this group have been experiencing torture for years and they are continuously going through it because they have no basic human rights which causes them to become dehumanized. Individuals have been tortured and dehumanized in more than one place, such as the life changing novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. For example, in the novel, Conrad describes the African as seen while their being tortured. In the text, it says, “A slight clinking behind me made me turn my head….each had an iron collar on his neck, and all were connected together with a chain whose bights swing between them, rhythmically clinking” (Conrad). Marlow has seen the medal collars rapped around the Africans necks and as they travel together it repeats the sound of clinking medal. The Europeans are using them as their tools for doing work and makes them wear collars to keep them as one. The Africans are experiencing torture because they have to walk around all day with that latched on to their necks. Having The Africans be torture in different ways is how they come to be dehumanized.

     Lastly, in both present and past treating people inhuman like has been spoken up on since the beginning of time. For example, in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, The Kapos did not show any remorse towards the people who died and also did not let the Jew’s show any as well. The novel explains that, “Then the entire camp, block after block, filed past the hanged boy and stared at his extinguished eyes, the tongue hanging from his gasping mouth. The Kapos forced everyone to look him squarely in the face” (Wiesel 63). The Kapos brutally hung a young boy and compelled the Jew’s to look the corpse in his face as he swings through the sky. The Kapos are forcing everything that is negative consequent to the Jew’s. The Jew’s are being treated unhuman like by the Kapos because they are watching a dead body hanging for ropes for hours unwillingly. These individuals are being forced to do something they would not normally do nor see which causes them to become dehumanized. People are being treated in multiple places and also different times periods such as in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. For example, in the novel it reads to us that they are referring to the African as “the devils”. It reads, “I’ve seen the devil of violence, and the devil of greed, and the devil of hot desire: but by all the stars! these were strong, lusty, red-eyed devils that swayed and drove men-men, I tell you” (Conrad) Marlow saw the devils (Africans) and starts describing them how they are strong and lusty with red eyes. Marlow basically think of them as creature for hell and does not think they are part of the human world. The Africans are being treated unhuman like because they are refers to them as devils, which are not human. This causes the Africans to become dehumanized because they are not look on as being the same as everyone else, they are jut creature that is not suppose to be there.

     Throughout history and literature in the past and present times groups of people and individuals have been dehumanized by being tortured, starved, portrayed as inhuman like and also being objectified. Dehumanization has played a major whole in one’s life during which ever time period the lived or live in. Individuals have been thought less of and treated with such lack of respect that they are being categorized in a variety of ways. Dehumanization ha taken away individuals humanity and we a nation and a world need to find different ways to prevent such tragic things like this from happening. Stopping this constant cycle is important because everyone has the given right be treated as a human who is loved and respected by the next

      In majority of high school environments teenagers are more than likely dating a significant other while parents say, "that's the reason your grades can't increase." but is that really the case? 100% of students have minds of their own and they are ultimately going to do what they want. Some can handle both dating and their school work but that's when prioritizing comes into place. If a student is more taken towards keeping a relationship than keeping high A's, then less opportunities will call to them. However, if a student is maintaining their grades then they will receive greater educational chances. Therefore, being a single-sex school does not affect your level of performance in school; it's whether it is important to the student. 

     In addition, teachers also play a role in getting educational opportunities. They are supposed to hold their students to high expectations and when that is not met then it effects how the student performs in the classroom academically. Educators are here to provide what is needed to ensure the scholars are receiving the proper instructions to fulfill the desire need of academic advances. Once again, it's not about the student being in a single-sex school, it's the levels of standards that teachers are holding them too.  

   When students are not performing to the best of their abilities think about the other reasons that could possibly be causing this result. In the end it just might not be the type of school their placed into.

Life Is Short  

Throughout history, many individuals have given up on life; to them, the best of times seemed like the worst. In the novel, Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho, we examine how the young twenty-four-year-old, main character Veronkia,is faced with the beauty of life. She gets and buys everything she could possibly want, has many boyfriends, a loving family, and a successful job. However, there is something that is stopping her from wanting to continue this amazing journey. Veronika feels that life is an everyday monotonous routine, in which she is in a dying need to get rid of, literally. Throughout the novel, Coelho uses theme of "death" to show how life can make a person do many things outside of their character upon their demise.  

The theme, death, is first taken place at the beginning of the story when Veronika makes her suicide attempt. Coelho mentions in the novel that, "Veronika had been trying to get hold of the pills for nearly six months. Thinking that she would never manage it, she even considered slashing her wrists...she was prepared to do all she could so that her death would cause little upset as possible, but if slashing her wrist was the only way, then she had no option..." (Ceolho 3). This shows how Veronika knew she had made up her mind months and months ago and if her original plan failed she would stop at anything to ensure her suicide was successful. Veronika is completely unsatisfied with the way her life is continuing. Because of all the pressure she has put on herself from faking her "true colors" with her friends to sleeping with anonymous men every night, she felt like her life didn't mean anything, so she made the conclusion to end everything with a few sleeping pills.  

Ironically, at the end of the novel, death is presented by the escape Veronika made at the mental hospital, Villete. The text demonstrates "...he knew that failed suicide tends to repeat the attempt sooner than later" (Coelho 207). Before this day occurred, Veronika remained thinking of multiple ways of achieving her goal. However, she also knew that she would soon die because of her heart condition, but she wanted to be the one to end her life. Dr. Igor injected Veronika with a medication that could possibly save her life. Unfortunately, when Veronika left Villete, she still had thoughts of ending her life without the knowledge of knowing she could have another chance at life. This illustrates how death can negatively affect someone's life and to show how ultimately there is no escaping it. 

In the final analysis, death is a significant factor in this novel based off the actions that Veronika takes. It has changed the way she thinks and changed the way she cared about the people in her life. Although she was sent to Villete so she could readjust her thinking, it ultimately doesn't work because she still eventually persuades herself to commit suicide. "Death never takes a wise man by surprise; he is always ready to go"- Ben Franklin. In other words, you will know when death is coming if have the knowledge of knowing when you are ready.
