         <description><![CDATA[<div>Deserts can form from a lack of water and rain. Deserts usually only get 250 ml of rain a year the least of any biome. The amount of evaporation in a desert often highly exceeds the annual rainfall.</div>]]></description>

         <title>How Deserts are Formed</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Deserts are formed by weathering processes, which cause enormous temperature differences between day and night to put strain on the rocks, causing them to break apart. Although rain rarely falls in deserts, there are sporadic downpours that might cause flash flooding. Rain can cause heated rocks to fracture, with the resulting fragments and rubble thrown across the desert floor being eroded further by the wind. This scoops up sand and dust particles, which can linger in the air for long periods of time, resulting in sand storms or dust storms. Wind-blown sand grains can abrade the surface of any solid object in their path. Rocks are polished, and sand is sorted into regular deposits by the wind. The grains are levelled in the end. Other deserts are flat, stony plains where all of the fine stuff has been blown away, leaving a mosaic of polished stones on the surface. Desert pavements are formed in these locations, and little more erosion occurs. Rock outcrops, exposed bedrock, and clays deposited by flowing water are some of the other desert features. When the water evaporates, temporary lakes and salt lakes may occur. There may be underground water sources in the form of springs and aquifer seepages. Deserts&nbsp;can form where these are found.</div>]]></description>

         <title>How We Should Manage Deserts</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Plant more trees - More trees should be planted because their roots help to hold the soil together and decrease soil erosion from wind and rain.<br><br>Improving soil quality - this can be accomplished by encouraging individuals to minimise the amount of grazing animals they own and instead plant crops. The dung from the animals can be utilised to fertilise the crops. Because the soil is held together by the roots of plants and protected from erosion, growing crops in this manner can improve the quality of the soil. This form of farming is more environmentally friendly.<br><br>Water management - during the wet season, water can be stored in earth dams and used to irrigate crops during the dry season. This is an example of how to manage water supply in a desert setting using proper technologies.&nbsp;<br><br>Magic stones - Magic stones (also known as bunds) are stone rings placed on the ground to keep water on the soil rather than letting it run off.&nbsp;<br><br>Drip Irritation - Drip Irritation is where water falls slowly onto the ground from pin-sized holes in a hose laid on top of the soil. This reduces water waste, increases efficiency, and can be delivered using a solar pump.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Types of Deserts:<br>Subtropical Deserts - general atmospheric circulation brings dry, subtropical air into mid-latitudes. Examples: Sahara of Northern Africa, Kalhari of Southern Africa, and the Great&nbsp;<br><br>Australian Desert - Continental Deserts - areas in the continental interiors, far from source of moisture with hot summers and cold winters. Examples: Gobi, Takla Makan.&nbsp;<br><br>Rainshadow Deserts - areas where mountainous regions cause air to rise and condense, dropping its moisture as it passes over the mountains. Examples: Deserts east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California &amp; Nevada, East of the Cascades of Oregon and Washington, and East of the Andes Mountains in South America.<br><br>Coastal Deserts - Areas where cold upwelling seawater cools the air and decreases its ability to hold moisture. Examples : Atacama Desert of coastal Peru, Namib Desert of coastal South Africa.<br><br>Polar Deserts - Cold polar regions where cold dry air prevails and moisture available remains frozen throughout the entire year. Examples: Northern Greenland, and ice-free areas of Antarctica.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
