He soon has a master in economics, a double major in journalism which helped open his eyes to the world. Gupta Anshu, in 2015, was given the Ramon Magsaysay Award from the RMAF board recognizes "his creative vision in transforming the culture of giving in India, his enterprising leadership in treating cloth as a sustainable development resource for the poor, and in reminding the world that true giving always respect and preserves human dignity."

While studying as a graduate student, he was exposed to the problems that haunted the rural areas of India during 1991, when an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit Northern India. He traveled to Uttarkashi, in hopes of helping people affected by the earthquake. While he was there, the shock of seeing the vulnerabilities of the poor from natural disasters drove him to leave his job and devote himself in helping others that are unable to help themselves.

Starting the Goonj, their attention was drawn to the vast quantities of unused cloth laying around in urban households, while the poor in rural areas die from lack of clothing. Goonj became a movement of donating underutilized material in order to recycle them to create clothing, blankets, and even clean sanitary pads to help women. Today, Goonj is striving towards educating others in India about the responsibility of Humans to give and share with one and another while creating and providing clothing and basic needs to the poor which has affecting millions of lives in India

I think that Gupta Anshu would agree with the Do it Yourself service club where the club educates children about recycling and being creative by using recyclable materials in order to create crafts, reflecting the ideas of the Goonj organization. Provided with the right time, I think that the Goonj organization and Gupta would recommend that these crafts should be used to educate families living in the urban areas in order to help and donate underutiltized cloth.
