Blog 3

My question this week is, who sets the standard of beauty? Fashion artist set the fashion trends but they are inspired by real people. When you watch movies and they show the stereotypical version of the model ex-girlfriend that the main girl has to worry about, what does she normally always look like? She’s the white, thin, tall, blonde, perfect haired and skinned, girl that isn’t even realistic. Same thing can be said about the pretty popular mean girl in all the crappy high school movies. Growing up not knowing any better. How can little girls of different races, hair texture and body types be expected to strive for something that not even accurate to actual beauty. Only about 9% worlds Americans are actually blonde naturally, of course you can dye your hair but that’s not the point. The rest of the standards are just things you’re born with or not born with. Representation in movies and in media of all different types of beautiful is so important for young girls. Girls should want to beautiful like them, not like her, whoever her may be. Speaking of representation in media, unrealistic standards are so widely promoted because of the overused photo shop we see in almost every professional photo you see has been touched up or redone. They can do just about anything to a picture. You can go from a size 6 to a size 0 with a drag of a mouse. I saw this video on YouTube of Donald trump being turned into a pizza and I figure if they can do that, they can add a thigh gap. Seeing these girls with perfect stomachs and bigger butts has led to an extreme increase in plastic surgery. In 2012 a study of the United States showed that there was 14.6 million people that received cosmetic surgery that year, scary.
http://www.thebeautybiz.com/103/article/body/who-sets-beauty-standards
http://misrepresentationofwomen.weebly.com/standards-of-beauty.html
https://www.plasticsurgery.org/news/press-releases/14-million-cosmetic-plastic-surgery-procedures-performed-in-2012
