This is because as a slave, she doesn't have a very high social background, so not many people would be willing to defend her story. People have made heavy accusations of her working with the 🤬, and they don't have any real reasons to not believe that.

I think it is Reverend Parris that should be blamed for the supposedly heinous acts of the girls. Rather than letting them express themselves, Parris runs his house by an iron hand, and questions or ridicules anyone who doubts him. He also pushes Abigail to blame people for letting the 🤬 seduce her when he interrogates her. This leads her to believe that instead of getting whipped for dancing, it would be better if she just blamed people for witchcraft. Because of his blatant desire for power and respect, Parris tries to deflect the name of witchcraft from his household onto others.

She appears to be the girl that is in charge of the group, and she keeps lying to hide what she was doing in the forest with the others. Since she threatened the girls, they are very willing to back up her story of what they were doing, and since she is the niece of Reverend Parris, he listens to her to explain what happened to Betty.

Then, when Parris wanted her to talk about what happened in the woods, she started to blame Tituba, and said that Tituba was the one who was forcing her to drink blood and all, while Tituba was saying that Abigail was the one who came to her begging to do this. Also, she first started accusing people at the end of Act 1, and Betty may have been just following her lead because she Abigail had just threatened her.

While many of the adult figures can be blamed for the hysteria due to the accusations of witchcraft, it seems that Reverend Parris is the most responsible for the actions of the girls. As Reverend, he constantly seeks power and a good name for himself in the village. Parris accuses Abigail several times of witchcraft as a result of her dancing in the forest. This causes her to realize how dangerous her situation is and leads to her threatening other girls. He also (along with Reverend Hale) interrogates Tituba which results in her making up stories of other people she saw involved with witchcraft.

Personally, I feel that Abigail was responsible for the hysteria afterward. She took her lie way too far and lead to the entirety of accusations and such. Although Reverend Parris may have contributed, in a severe part, to the accusations and hysteria, by forcing Tituba into a place where she had to confess. A Chinese proverb says, "Even a rabbit bites when forced into a corner," meaning that Tituba, now forced into a place where it's either death or confession, will confess just to get out of such a situation. Abigail forced such a situation upon the people of Salem.

Due to everything that Abigail does beforehand, she leads to everything that happens afterward. Abigail forces Betty, Mercy, and Mary Warren to stay quiet about what happened in the forest, thus leading the perception that witchcraft is involved.

I think Abigail is responsible for the witchcraft chaos, because she was with Betty, dancing in the woods that night, supposedly engaging with the 🤬. She intimidates the girls and makes them come to the woods with her and forces them to stay quiet about what occurred in the woods that night. Since Parris is her uncle, he backs up her story about what happened to Betty in the forest, which is that she fainted when he jumped out of the bush. For example, Abigail says, "She made me do it! She made Betty do it!" (pg.40). She starts to put the blame on innocent people and blames others for her and Bettys actions. She accused others of witchcraft to take the blame off of herself, but this caused much trouble throughout the city.

In Act I of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams provokes the hysteria of the Salem witch trials. Abigail pushes the other girls to conceal their taboo actions and behaviors. And although the blame belongs to more than just one character, Abigail's deceit ultimately starts the "snowball effect" that leads to the tragedy of the Salem witch trials. If the girls simply confessed what they had done, they would have been punished, but accusations of witchcraft would not have occurred. Abigail accuses Tituba and others who are completely innocent. In addition to this, when the men interrogate Tituba, the slave defends herself, saying that Abigail begged Tituba to make a curse against Elizabeth Proctor. This shows that Abigail's resentment for Elizabeth Proctor started the whole summoning business in the first place. Even though others are also at fault in the witch hunt, it all begins because of Abigail William's resentment and duplicity.

I feel as though Abigail was the one responsible for the hysteria that happened in Act 1. Although many of the adult figures, like Reverend Parris contributed to this hysteria, Abigail tends to have the greatest impact on it. Abigail was first described as having a "capacity for dissembling"(pg 9), which is clearly shown in the later pages. She makes up these stories that frame Tituba, who seems to be an innocent bystander. Not only was Abigail lying, she was also framing someone, who was forced into preforming these rituals. Abigail was the one who has now forced this situation upon the people of Salem, but has only done that get herself out of trouble, since she and Betty were out doing wrong. Tituba, is now in a position where only death and confession can get her out of this whole mess.

As she is a very confident and convincing person, it is really easy to believe everything she says. But you can see how she is responsible for her actions in the forest, as she desperately makes an effort to cover up any evidence that Rev. Parris tries to point out. She threatens the other girls to not tell anyone the truth, while simultaneously putting on a facade of a helpless girl who doesn't know any better. Towards the end of Act 1, you can see how easy it is for her to put the blame on other people, including Tituba, who has cared for her most of her life. She doesn't even care about what Tituba has done for her, but just wants to make sure that no one accuses her of anything and that she keeps her reputation clean.

She didn't want to take responsibility for her actions, so instead she just accused other people to get her out of trouble and distract the attention to others. It was shown when she accused Tituba, who just did what Abigail said, of being a witch and forcing her to drink blood, when in reality Abigail forced Tituba to help he with the blood. But since she didn't want to take the blame, she put it on someone else to take care of it.

Many characters are responsible for the hysteria inflicted upon the people in Salem. However, in my opinion, Reverend Parris and Abigail are the most to blame. Abigail's immature behavior causes her to try and almost coerce Tituba into engaging with the 🤬 so that she could attempt to 🤬 John Proctor's wife. She threatens Betty and the other girls to not tell anyone, because she knows that the consequences are severe. Her prideful and manipulative personality causes her to accuse many innocent people of "fraternizing" with the 🤬. Reverend Parris is responsible for the hysteria in Salem as well. His thirst for power and desire of being perceived as a reputable figure causes him to reject the mere thought of Betty being involved with witchcraft. He unnecessaily interrogates everyone, and prioritizes his social status over Betty's well-being.

Abigail's immaturity causes for her to blame others instead of taking the responsibility for her activities. In Act 1, Abigail accuses Tituba for making her drink blood every night but when Abigail was explaining about last night to Betty, she never mentioned anything about Tituba or anyone else in the forest and as the events started to unfold, she starts accusing people in order for her to seem innocent in front of the others.

In Act 1, there are many scenes that show Abigail is a vengeful, selfish, and manipulative girl. She uses persuasive words to make herself look innocent and shift the blame to others such as Tituba. This shows how selfish Abigail is by blaming someone who has taken care of her for many years. When Reverend Hale started to interrogate Abigail, she immediately blamed Tituba for converting her into witchcraft. Then Tituba was pressured into naming names to avoid punishment which prompted Betty and Abigail to start blaming others as well. Soon after, the girls enjoyed the sense of power they had which led them to shamelessly name suspicious women to shift the attention away from them.

Many characters in Arthur Miller's The Crucible helped promote the chaos however, Abigail Williams is the most to blame. Abigail is shown as a girl at the age of 17, where she is portrayed as brash and immature. Abigail is also the most intimidating of the group, making her the groups 'leader'. She was the first of the several girls to accuse innocent people of witchcraft to protect herself from her selfish needs. Hence all the girls followed her directions, and became possessed under a specter, to explain their sinful behavior. She starts by accusing Tituba multiple times to draw the attention away from herself. Through this method, she developed a way by accusing innocent people (especially her desire to get rid of Goody Proctor), showing no remorse. Due to these acts, the girls realized that they welded a great amount of power in their possession.

For me personally, I believe that Abigail is the one most responsible for the Salem witch trials because the narrative generally follows a cause and effect flow as the Abigail's lust leads to the dancing which leads to Parris finding out about the dancing, and causes the whole fray in the bedroom of Betty as she is "unconscious" which is in all part due to Abigail. Abigail is the one who forces Betty and the other girls to flow the narrative of "being possessed" and along the way, causes Tituba to accuse people of witchcraft as well. But the most important aspect of this chart is that it all began with Abigail, Abigail's lust for Proctor and her desire to rid of Goody Proctor. At the root of the trials, Abigail is the one to blame, which is why I believe she is the one most responsible for the conflict.

Going against the grain, I honestly believe that the Putnam Family specifically Thomas Putnam and Goody Putnam. The Putnams were the ones that brought up the idea that Betty's "ailment" could be witchcraft, because of this, Abigail and the other girls are now considered to at least have knowledge of witchcraft. This simple thing is enough to most likely have them be hanged, or at least severely punished. So to escape punishment they began accusing other people. If the Putnams didn't place the suspicion on the girls in the first place then they wouldn't have been able to accuse anyone of witchcraft.

In my opinion, I strongly think that Abigail is responsible of how this whole situation plays out. She takes the most important role in this crisis, as she was the first to commit a sin, then starts to increase tensions between multiple people, such as John Proctor, and Betty. This escalates to the point we are at right now. Another reason why I think she is the most responsible for this is because she burst out and accused Tituba out of nowhere. Tituba responds by blaming even more people, taking the blame off of her, Abigail, and Betty, who both catch on and join in as well. In conclusion, Abigail is a major part of how this problem was built, and how it will spread to take over the town of Salem.

I hold to think that Abigail is the one to blame and the cause to the hysteria. Yes, Tituba was the first to start naming names, but you can't fuel fire without fuel and I believe that Abigail did just that. Abigail could have fessed up about the actual truth, but instead, being the impulsive and aggressive person she is, fuels the fire and starts to conjure up her own story and name names. Which then leads to Betty naming names (fueling the fire). It starts with the names "Sarah Good" and "Goody Osborn" but then leads to "Bridget Bishop," "George Jacobs," Goody Howe," "Martha Bellows," "Goody Sibber," "Alice Barrow," "Goody Hawkins," "Goody Bibber," and "Goody Booth". All whom are people that Abigail and Betty named. Abigail did not have to start naming names, and instead she could have just plainly told the truth, and suffer the consequences. However, she hides the truth causing an act that will soon later lead to bigger problems.

In my opinion, I believe that both Abigail Williams and Reverend Parris are the two people that are the most responsible for the new wave of hysteria and witch blaming in Salem. First, Reverend Parris stayed strong in his belief that his child was cursed with supernatural powers. He denies that his child, Betty Parris, is just wan when Reverend Hale tells him it is a possibility. Due to the pressure from the village accusing him of being related to witchcraft, he then pushes all of this onto Abigail who is the main face of the new coming hysteria. Abigail is a very prominent figure and a leader of the group consisting of younger girls. She is able to influence many others, and this is shown when she manipulates the girls into being quiet about what really happened in the forest. If she had just come out and told the truth, she would have been prosecuted immediately since she was trying to 🤬 Goody Proctor by drinking blood. Instead, she pressures and shifts her guilt onto Tituba who is dragged downwards. Everything that happens after Tituba falsely confesses stemmed from Abigail's actions and her inability to own up to what she did wrong. She seizes the power that is offered to her however, and manages to blame many, many innocent people in the town of Salem. This begins the hysteria that follows the previously quiet village and leads many to their death.

Abby also shows herself as very aggressive and controlling (maybe even manipulative) when she threatened Mary Warren in Act 1 when Mary was worried about getting in trouble. She may have the most evil motives/intentions, since she drank blood and is plotting a 🤬 on Elizabeth Proctor. She also causes a lot of hysteria when she gets up and plays innocent, blaming and placing the guilt on others, after Tituba makes her "confession" at the end Act 1. A lot of Abby's acts cause Betty to do something that scares the people, for example, her scream during the psalm and joining in when Abby was playing innocent and accusing people.

Out of all the people introduced so far in the Crucible, I believe Abigail is the most responsible for spreading accusations of witchcraft. Reverend Parris was interrogating her about it after discovering that she had been dancing in the woods with a group of other girls. She was probably spreading accusations to implicate someone before the town turns on her. Abigail could use these people as excuses for her behavior (she could claim she was being possessed by the witches) She seems to have some kind of hidden agenda as she threatened the other girls who were dancing with death if they chose to divulge any information about what happened that night. If the dancing had nothing to do with witchcraft, why be so concerned? I believe Abigail could also use the influence of witchcraft as a scapegoat in case word of her affair with John Proctor gets out. All in all, Abigail is basically the Regina George of Salem and seems ready to personally victimize anyone who gets in her way.

To start, the lies begin when Abigail must conceal the secret of her affair with Proctor by not telling Reverend Paris the truth. Instead of receiving the punishments for her sins, she decides to shift the blame to witches and a supernatural force. Later, by threatening the other girls involved in the dancing, they felt that they could not say the truth in fear of Abigail killing them. This causes Betty to act strangely, as if she has been bewitched. Also, Abigail is the first to blame another person of witchcraft, Tituba, causing Tituba to then reveal the "witches" in Salem. Lastly, Abigail is seen as a leader among her peers, seen by her intimidation on them, showing that Abigail was probably one of the people who led the group to dance into the forest.

The aggressive and domineering behavior Abigail displayed when threatening the other girls displayed the fact that she had leadership in the group and controlled just what they did. I blame her because of the fact she along with the other girls actively chose to participate in acts that they knew were wrong and then when they were caught seized the opportunity to cause hysteria out of a drive for attention.

The person who is most responsible for the hysteria in Act 1 of The Crucible is Abigail for multiple reasons. For example, Abigail is too concerned about the well being of her own name in the town that she accuses Tituba and Ruth of being the culprits to witchcraft, in the hopes of taking the blame off of herself. A good example of this is when she says, "My name is good in the village! I will not have it said that my name is soiled!"(12). This shows that even though she was one of the girls that was dancing in the forest, she chooses to blame others as a way to escape the harsh reality of witchcraft and its consequences.

Also Abby was known to lie and wasn't rally one to admit to her mistakes. Abigail throughout Act 1 just tries to make sure that she doesn't ruin her name. She does not seem to care as much about anyone else and even though she was the one who lead the girls into the woods she doesn't want to take responsibility for it. She also makes up so different lies throughout the act to cover up what she did, for example when she had to lie to Reverend Paris about the affair with Proctor since she did not want to take the blame and accept the consequences.

She is the one that takes the lead or responsibility for the girls meeting with Tituba in the woods, and when Parris discovers them, she attempts to conceal her behavior because it will reveal her affair with Proctor if she confesses to casting a spell on Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail also lies to prevent charges of witchcraft . In order to avoid severe punishment for casting spells and attempting to plot Elizabeth's death, Abigail shifts the focus away from herself by accusing others witchcraft.

In the text we also get a conversation between abigail and proctor john about her affair and how she wants the proctor to leave his wife to be with her. I also blame Tituba to some extent because she "admitted" to knowing magic yet there is no such thing. i do not blame Tituba that much ,as she was only trying to protect herself, and the stark difference of treatment before and after she admitted lies testament to this.

At first, when Parris was questioning Abigail about the dancing in the forest and if they did anything else, she replied by stating that all they did was dance. This way, when Parris found out that dancing wasn't the only thing they were doing in the forest, it made it seem like Abigail had something to hide, making it easy to accuse her and many others of witchcraft.

There are multiple perspectives in the argument at the end of Act 1. At first I was appalled at the actions of Tituba. She not only confessed to witchcraft, which i don't blame her for doing, but she also took this opportunity to accuse others in the village. This planted the seed for Abigail and Betty's confessions. Initially it was Abigail that I thought should be blames for the hysteria but it was largely due to Tituba's actions. Of course he actions were brought on by her social status and how the people treated her but she went out of her way to point blame at others instead of just plainly confessing. Abigail was equally at fault. She was the one who started the entire mess in the first place to get rid of John Procter's wife. Additionally, the minute Tituba accuses someone else of witchcraft Abigail saw her chance and accused more and more woman.

While numerous people remain justifiably blameworthy for the hysteria caused in Act I, Abigail demonstrates the most problematic tendencies. She is depicted as rather deceptive early on in the story, which I think speaks volumes. Building on that, the knowledge that Abigail drank blood in an effort to eliminate Elizabeth Proctor suggests she was behind the whole woods escapade. She has no qualms about threatening Betty and directing the fault to anyone but herself, when the "witchcraft" predicament could've been avoided, had she not become involved with John Proctor.

Instead, Tutuba had been pitied and they helped her to find God and turn away from the 🤬. They were so strict with their rules and expectations that the girls felt guilty for dancing in the forest. They felt as if they could get away with it if they blamed other women of witchcraft. This did end up working because then the adults believed they were in the controls of witchcraft by some other women. They accused people to get rid of the guilt that would not have been there if the adults hadn't made a society of strict rules and morals. Some of the adults who cause this were Reverend Parris, who did not want his name to besmirched with talks of witchcraft in his house and cared too much about his reputation and Mr. Gale, who kept saying that he would help them if they were being controlled by the 🤬.

I agree with Delphine that the girls are to be blamed for the witch trials and more importantly Abigail, since she was the main motive that encouraged the group of girls to perform the malicious schemes of accusing individuals that were innocent. Throughout the novel it becomes more apparent the Abigail was the main cause that initiated the witch trials. For example, in Act 3 when Abigail claims she was been hurt by the 🤬 to Mr. Danforth who has a sense of mistrust, Abigail angrily responds, "Let you beware, Mr.Danforth.Think you to be so mighty that the power of the 🤬 may not turn to your wits"(pg 100). In other words, Abigail threatens Mr. Danforth, who is the deputy governor of the court that he is at an equal chance of getting possessed by the 🤬 as anyone else since he feels a sense of mistrust for Abigail. This shows us that Abigail is the one to blame for the witch trials since she is warning Mr.Danforth about the 🤬 as an escape for her problems, similarly to how she accused Elizebeth so she could get back with proctor.

I think this is mainly Abagail's fault. If she wasn't prone to constantly lying she could have avoided all of this. If she had told the truth of what she was doing instead of lying that it was witchcraft it would have put her in trouble and show that there was no witchcraft being used at all.

I agree that Abigail should take full responsibility for everyone dancing in the woods. As stated in act one, Abigail was, "discharged from Goody Proctor's service" (Lee 11), presumably for having an affair with John Proctor. This makes it clear that Abigail lusted after Proctor and decided to act on her feelings for him. If Abigail had done the right thing and put her feelings away, she would not really hate Goody Proctor, but rather hate herself and John for not feeling the same hate. If Abigail had no hate for Goody Proctor, she would not have felt inclined to attempt to 🤬 Goody Proctor by dancing in the woods and performing anti-puritan rituals. -Max Callister, per.3.

I agree with Rian for a few reasons. First of all, the first people to have virtually knocked over the first of the dominoes that would eventually lead to the continuation of all the other events to come can be seen in act I. In this scene, Paris finds Abigail as well as the other girls dancing in the forest. Than continuing onto when Abigail is questioned, and whilst confessing they were dancing, she also blames others for her actions. Ultimately using this façade throughout the entire story before running away, in order to start, and continue these series of unfortunate events. The cause of her actions come mostly from vengeance toward john proctor, but more his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. For example, she was "discharged from Goody Proctor's service" (Lee 11) by Elizabeth because of the vile business she’s been in with John. Along with that, she wants to be johns one and only, and she believes that getting rid of Elizabeth will do the trick. To show that she is obviously still to blame, she practically controls and leads the other girls into doing what they’ve been doing. For instance, in the court room, whatever she does the other girls follow, this can be seen in the court room, where “with fear ... at the ceiling - the girls do the same"(114). Ultimately showing how Abigail is to blame for all of the things that have gone wrong. Tin Tran (period 3)

The girls start to blame many female citizens of Salem at the end of Act 1. Many things contributed to their accusations, but it was mostly the adult's fault.

Everyone has a part in the mass hysteria and panic and though many factors caused the ball to start rolling, I do believe that Abigal is the one to blame the most for it. It had been stated around the beginning of act 1 that she had done certain things in order to keep her name in the vilkahe, and she is doing such now. She started accusing people causing the others to question the people around them, and to only worsen the situation, tituba had done the same thing, admiring to it than accusing others. All after they both "accepted" Jesus and god.

I also agree with Tin that Abigail was to blame for the mass hysteria since she lies about what she does, and she strikes fear into the girls that follow her, which is shown when Abby tells Mary that "God made [her] face; [she] cannot want to tear [her] face" (115). When Abby does this, Mary Warren loses her resolve and calls Proctor the 🤬's man. This causes everyone to go after Proctor, while Mary Warren saves herself. Abby is motivated by her want to be with Proctor, so everything she does is to try and get closer to Proctor, up until the moment Proctor calls himself a lecher. Since her reputation is almost ruined, she just tries to save herself and run. Because of her desire to be with Proctor, she catches the townspeople up in the trials, when her main target was Goody Proctor. -Kyle Verhagen

I agree that Abigail is the main perpetrator of all the hysteria. Of course, she isn't the only one at fault here- no one is completely guilt free. However, she contributed significantly, especially with her quest to rid John Proctor of Elizabeth for her own purposes and intentions. She is extremely motivated by such- to get rid of Elizabeth. As Proctor aptly puts it, the hysteria is "a 🤬's vengeance, and [they] must see it" (110). She is so full of desire to be with John Proctor that she will go to every extent to achieve her scheming and dirty goal.

I believe that all the young girls could be blamed for the hysteria in Salem, but the most guilty is Abigail. She is immediately presented as a liar, and soon after she is interrogated by Reverend Parris it is revealed she didn't tell him the whole truth about the story as to be found less guilty. She also later threatens the other girls responsible, who might've been willing to tell the whole truth of the encounters in the woods. Lastly, she is the first one of the girls to speak up and blame other innocent girls, even bringing up new names that Tituba didn't say, showing her desperateness to get out of the situation they created and blame it on others.

I agree that all the girls can be proven responsible, but I also believe that Abigail is the most responsible for the pandemonium throughout the down. Abigail seemed fishy when she was first introduced and throughout the play she seemed more and more guilty. While taking this into consideration however, I believe that John Proctor could be just as responsible. He committed adultery with Abigail, but didn't want to have a relationship because of his wife. This is the main reason Abigail gets so jealous and wants to get out of the house. If John never had an affair with Abigail, she would've never had got the idea that John would ever want to be with her.

I think that although many people could be responsible for the mass hysteria of Act 1, Abigail is most blameworthy in this situation. She changed her story because Reverend Parris questioned her, and is shown to be very deceptive, and seems like she knows how to get what she wants. She additionally blamed all her and Betty's behavior on Tituba, but does not recieve the results she had expected. Instead, Tutuba had been pitied and they helped her to find God and turn away from the 🤬. I'm sure that since this was not the result that Abby desired, that is why she began to name off more and more people that had presumably been "associated with the 🤬".

Brooke Oh: I agree with Mackenzie, because Abigails vindictive lying and evilness is what started everything. She lied about dancing in the woods and blamed Tituba for their actions, so that she doesn't get caught. For example, Abigail says "I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the 🤬's people-and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a-" (pg.100). She always manipulates people and acts like the victim, when she is actually the person who is in the wrong and went against the idea of Puritanism. She enjoys people dying and continues to accuse people of witchcraft, although she knows the consequences. This indicates that she doesn't care about others and since she feels guilty for dancing in the woods, she starts to accuse others to take away her guilt. Therefore, she is to be blamed for the witch trials.

I think that Abigail is most responsible for the mass hysteria being seen. At first, she was changing her story. She said she didn't drink anything in the woods, then confesses to drinking blood. Once she blames Tituba, but Tituba is saved, she wants that too. Abigail pinned the blame on Tituba but when she was "saved" Abigail wanted that too. After Abigail realizes she's safe after being "saved," she goes on to name names and pin the blame elsewhere. Betty adds to it by following her lead and naming names. They aren't telling the truth, just lying so they don't get in trouble.

Despite this all carrying some very true weight, we can't ignore that these women and girls have absolutely no power in this society. The men around them control not only what they can and can't do, but also the government and what is considered okay. That being said, I believe that Reverend Parris is at fault for what went down in Salem because despite the population having dislike and discontent towards him he has power and influence. So when this issue comes up he is meant to be the voice of reason, but he neglects that and does everything in a vain attempt to save himself. In Act Three, Mary Warren, who is one of the girls involved, comes up to Parris and Danforth to say this entire thing was a lie and pretend. With this in the stage directions you can read that this was an unexpected factor in maintain ing his power and almost immediately tries discrediting them by exclaiming, "Excellency, you surely cannot think to let so vile a lie be spread in court" (3.89). This occurs again a few pages later on in the text when Mary Warren goes on further with her story. This occurrence goes in direct contradiction with his reaction to the witchcraft in the very beginning. This shows how all of his actions in this play are reputation and power motivated. Thus seeing this change in him shows that since he's in power, if wanted this to spread and become what it has then he would have let it happen and since we read the book we know he allowed it and even promoted it by discrediting Mary Warren.

I agree that Abigail was to blame because of how she changed the story, which you talked about naming names like in act 3 how she is mocking Mary Warren when she tries to expose the truth and reviles to the court all of Abby’s lies. She also blames many others and by the end of the play gets many killed due to the fact that she wanted to be with a guy that she could never be with. Without Abby’s selfish acts this whole issue could have been prevented from the beginning.

I believe that Abigail is the most responsible for all the hysteria in Act 1. Abigail was not fully telling the truth when Reverend Parris was questioning her which made her look guilty of unacceptable behavior which in part led to all the hysteria. I also believe that Reverend Parris is at fault because if it weren't for his austerity and his extremely strict persona, Abigail might not have felt the need to conceal her actions and lie about her time in the woods which would have maybe prevented all of the hysteria that was creating during Act 1.

MACKENZIE WONG: I agree with Sarah, because Abigail was not telling the whole truth when Parris questioned her. Her deceitful truth telling caused mass hysteria amongst the town. Abigail's skill for lying is shown when she complains, "I have been near murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the 🤬's people- and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, [and] questioned[...?]" (pg. 100). This quote shows that Abigail is not to be trusted because she is making herself seem like the victim, while simultaneously bamboozling the rest of the court and most of the townspeople. The only people who were not fooled by the lying, cheating snake in the grass, that is Abigail, was John Proctor, Reverend Hale, Reverend Parris, and Mary Warren. Therefore, the witch trials is Abigail's fault because had she not have taken the lie this far, the trials and witch hunts would never have happened.

Although one can point the finger at many different people at the end of Act 1, I believe that Abigail is the most responsible for this because she does not have the best of reputations and is very bossy. She could have pulled the others into her little plan and blamed it on them or the 🤬 because her father is the reverend.

Abigail would be considered most responsible for the cause of creating hysteria in the village. To begin with, her story was inconsistent and changed throughout the act. When Abigail was first questioned she expressed that never drank anything in the wood which was later debunked. The truth came out when the girl cried, “You drank blood, Abby! ... You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor” (Miller) Since the truth came out it created uneasiness and confusion, to stir the confusion she changes her story and blames Tituba. She says “She made me do it! She made Betty do it!” Tituba didn’t hold back and saved herself from the trouble. Abigail no once again the focus of attention she starts to involve and blame more people name after name. Trying to blame anyone else but herself.

Many things contributed to their accusations, but it was mostly the adult's fault. They were so strict with their rules and expectations that the girls felt guilty for dancing in the forest. They felt as if they could get away with it if they blamed other women of witchcraft.
