Essential questions guide the lesson or unit in a way that provides focus for both the student and the teacher.

I have used EQs in my class to help students know what the focus is. Usually they are posted on the board or within the assignment that is given for the day or week. During Good to Great, we used EQs to help guide the unit and students were then required to answer one of the four questions at the end of the unit. There were smaller questions during close reading that helped students organize their thoughts and could be used as an aid when finally answering the EQ.

Howard

I have seen essential questions being used across a unit. For example, the teacher will revisit the essential question with students daily, so that students can integrate their new knowledge into a more complex understanding of the topic. I also notice that essential questions are open-ended, so that there is not only one possible answer for a question, but many possible, complex responses.
