The Abyss

The Abyss in the Hero’s Journey is parallel to Finals. The Abyss is the most difficult, strenuous task the hero must conquer. Additionally, facing the Abyss includes a “death” and “rebirth”. During Finals week, the long study hours were a near-death experience, but once Finals were over, it was as if the weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I was “reborn”.

Temptations and Challenges

Throughout the first semester, I was faced with many challenges and temptations. In a hero’s journey, the challenges are obstacles to overcome, and the temptations are that that divert the hero from their mission. The challenges in my way were the tedious and difficult tests and assignments I was given by my teachers. Then the temptation I faced was the yearning to give up when tests got too hard, or the overwhelming desire to quit studying and watch Netflix.

The Return

In the Hero’s Journey, the Return involves the hero passing back into the known world, coming home with a Gift of the Gods. This stage applies to my first semester because, although I did not go back to 8th grade, I made high school my known world. After an entire semester at this school, it is no longer unusual and foreign, and is now my comfortable, known world. In addition, upon defeating the Abyss and finishing Finals, I received a Gift of the Gods: Winter Break.

Threshold

My transition from 8th grade to high school is similar to Crossing the Threshold. Passing through the threshold involves the hero to move from their mundane world into a new, unknown land, which is the equivalent of me leaving my comfortable position at the middle school and venturing into a foreign high school. I crossed the threshold on the first day of 9th grade.

Cinder's Threshold

Cinder is asked to repair the Prince’s robot. She passes through a threshold when she enters the Palace, it is somewhere she has never ventured before, completely new to her.

Cinder's Challenges

Cinder begins in a tough place, she is a cyborg, half human, half machine. Her stepmother and cruel sisters use her as a maid and show her no compassion because of her “condition”. There is a deadly disease in her town, which she must carefully avoid. Then, when her sister, the only person in her family who is kind to her, dies from said disease, Cinder must overcome the emotional trauma. Cinder is faced with a burdensome decision to either tell the Prince she is a cyborg, or continue to lie to him. He is her temptation, she wants him, but knows she will never be able to have him.

Cinder's Abyss

At the Ball, Cinder attempted to confront Queen Levana (antagonist). Cinder ended up humiliating herself, and accidentally revealing to the Prince that she was part machine. This was her darkest moment, but when it was over, she realized she could beat the Queen, and that she didn’t need the Prince in her life.

Cinder's Return

After Cinder’s embarrassing incident with Queen Levana, she was thrown in jail. A doctor working at the Palace, and a good friend, rescued Cinder, and provided her with a spaceship to escape from the prison. Cinder’s Gift of the Gods was knowledge, she learned she was Princess Selene, the true heir to the Lunar thrown, not Levana. Cinder also received a new cyborg, as her previous one was damaged.
