Great time at InterUFU

This is a brief comment about what was InterUfu and what means the internationalization of the Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU). InterUFU is an academic event that happens once a year. In this event, there are a lot of lectures about internationalization. For example, they bring different people from different countries. At the event, there was an embassy of Canada, Australia, France, German, United States, and others. This event started on Monday morning and ended on Thursday afternoon, therefore the event was held on 8th - 10th October of 2019 . The embassy had a lot of conversations, specially with students who are planning to make an exchange soon. They talked about their country, about what it’s like to live in someone else’s house, about the academic environment, how we can study there. Also, there was some lectures about students that already went to another country to do this abroad. I was listening to one about a man who went to United States to teach portuguese for English speakers. It definitely was a huge opportunity for me, but a difficult one too. In addition, I have to mention the whole team that made this event happened: the teachers, students and us, the listeners.

I wanted to write about this event because everyone that knows me also knows that I have a huge dream, which is to make an exchange to Australia. Moreover, all the things said during this event proved that I am where I was supposed to be. Therefore, I’m not writing about this event just because of my dream, but also because when I was listening to some students talking there, they were talking in english,I did practice my listening skills and my speaking, specially because we had to make a lot of questions and take notes. Also, I’ve realized that I want to be part of the group that were making the presentation some day. But in some specific way, I was startled when I noticed that I was already talking to them. I didn’t know that I was capable to talk without thinking in portuguese. This skills, that I believed that was improved, are essential to be a teacher. How would we talk to our students if we couldn’t pronounce a word?
This event, was absolutely a huge opportunity for me.

The activity was to reflect on slides, to get to know a little bit more of “How to encourage good reading habits in kids ” , and then to do a feedback for teachers and practice oral comprehension – listening and writing. I performed on October 1rst, in the Integrated Skills class. About the listening part: the person will listen to someone explaining how we can, as teachers, introduce those habits into kids, what we have to do, where do we need to start from. The presentation needs to have five-minutes to explain all the ideas. To begin, I started making some reflection with them, about the importance of “Reading habits”, because I wanted to engage their minds into the presentation. After, I showed the six steps to create a reading habits in kids that the article mentioned and how to do it. Then, by the end I did a reflection about kid’s habits, for example, if kids have habits to read something they will have more confidence to defend their thought in the future.

So, I chose this theme because it was difficult for me when I was doing the same one. For me, it is extremely important to have a foreknowledge or a pre-vocabulary before doing a task. Because I don’t want that the younger generation, the ones that are going to create this habit, to understand how do it better than me.

When I did the activity I improved a lot my speaking, because to present the slides to the professor and to my colleagues I had to practice at home, and every time that I was training I recorded it to hear, and after it I corrected what I was saying ‘wrong’. This kind of exercises can represent how good you are speaking (in your presentation) – because you have to speak very well in order to be understood.

However, you need to work on your skills to improve your speaking, listening and writing. If you are a teacher and don’t pronounce the word correctly the students may not take you seriously. This is a theme that must be discussed in our classroom!

This is the activity that I prepared with my classmate Izabela Ferreira and we presented it in November 2019 to the class and the professor. It was supposed to the groups prepare slides based on “English around the world”, so we choose the country Australia and it was an incredible presentation.
I did not know that the whole class would love to watch us and we planned to divided it in 6 parts. The first one is the introduction, we presented the topic and said why we chosen this country, why this country is important, and mostly why we thought that it was special. The second part we talked a little bit about Australia’s location and some specifics places that most of the people heard about it. Then, the third part we decide to present Australia’s history and dismitcize what is the festival (to celebrate Australia day) to Australians. After, we started to say about culture, we spend some time during presenting this topic because it involves language, games, music, food and animals. So when we were going to explain the language, we focus on the accent and what is the difference between British, American and Australian accent.
Besides that, we wanted to show to our colleagues something different so we brought from home a specific food from Australia and a unique video explaining the accent.

This Portfolio is a sequence of six works based on what I did and participated during the second semester, on a discipline ministered by professor Maíra Córdula at the Federal University of Uberlândia.
It contains two self-study activities, taken from some books in which I studied grammar and vocabulary, one individual presentation and one group presentation - which was in pair - one reflection about a workshop I went on and one note I took from class.
The documents are a product that I wrote and they are presented in chronological order.. We, students, spent the whole term writing and correcting this work and I hope you, the reader, like it.
Every column has a reflection based on the activity that was made. Therefore, this portfolio, is an academic work to help us to understand better all the activities that the professor gave to us during the semester.
Further, I am glad to see my work exposed in this website and happier, because I have the opportunity to understand that everything in a class can become a student product, and it can be part of a portfolio collection. In addition, I believe that this will help me to organize myself as a student and that it will also remind me of the time I was studying when graduate.

The title of the activity is “The career ladder”.

The objective of this activity is to expand your vocabulary about career ladder, which I believe I could use it in some interviews, when applying for a job, in a company or even if to give and receive orders. This specific theme was important for me to practice my writing and reading skills. After reading the explanation on page 134, I did the activities on page 135

Then, I have created a description about it, you can find the explanation and the activity uploaded with my personal notes right down below. To be able to understand the activity, you must see the documents mentioned, because based on that, I will do a reflection about how it was while I was studying.

That is not good to use when you are going to make some interviews, for example, but there is specific words to say to the person who is leaving a company, for example - the words are quit or sacked.
I loved the activity because I didn’t need to explain a situation that already had a meaning (specific word).
Also I learned some synonyms that will help me with my academic papers, for example, if I need to elaborate an article and if it mentioned something about career I can use the correct word and my career, sooner or later I’ll have to do my curriculum and this vocabulary will help me a lot.

First of all, I want to say this job was one of my best works, I really thought about the beginning of the class that it would be a boring activity, but the days were passing and I realized that everyone were important to make a change in my English skills.
Secondly, I did not know that every activity here will need so much time to search, or to do a preparation before going to class. And this was a new way for me to see the exercises and the activities, that we need to separate time and be patient to the knowledge, because we most of the times want to the opportunities drop in our table and we need to go forward it.
I also, was very happy when I realized that I was learning some vocabulary or grammar just by myself, making me correct my texts or my speaking.
I found the themes that the professor approach very important to my graduation, specially when Maíra taught English around the world and translanguaging. It open it my mind to the English teaching and as I am going to be a English teacher this aspects must be approached by me in the background of the classroom.
So, for sure It was an unique opportunity to develop my teaching and learning techniques. Especially now that I started to teach kids.

This is an activity prepared by me when teacher Maira told us to write a short story that happened to us and use a topic sentence to summarize the main idea of the story and then we were supposed to make a development about the issue.

Then, we needed it to share with our classmates and they were going to correct you if there was anything wrong. Here is my text: “ Title: Internship to teach English for kids. Text: One day I saw an announcement on my email box saying that there was an internship opportunity and from this day forward my life changed it. I was called to do the interview and they asked me about my English skills and teaching approach. That time, I was not so good at it but I joined it and they said to me that they were going to give me one chance. After that, I started to work firstly with some research around the neighbor with the community, we went from house to house because we needed some information about the society that lived there. So, when we finished all the houses, we started to plan the course and the lesson plan. My life changed because we had to look inside books or use internet to search some activities for the kids that I was going to teach and I am not going to see any activity as a normal one anymore, but now I will see it with a pedagogical view. For me, it have been being a good time at work because every meeting I learn something new and I can not wait to teach the kids from the community. I’m looking forward.” After writing my pair made some corrections and it really helped me with my topic sentence.

So, I realized is important to know how to use it and how to teach it. I really liked this activity because involves our classmates, and they have the responsibility so they need to understand the sentence topic. However, not everyone knew about topic sentence, but at the class we were learning while the other were reading the text so the pair had to pain attention and take some notes. I believe that was very helpful, and we learned to use it correctly.
