Teaching students and parents how to identify, intervene, and/or report out in bullying situations will help create a positive culture. There are other strategies: teaching social emotional learning, posting bullying-prevention pathways online, develop student safety and student respectful behavior plans, outline consequences, increase supervision in areas where students are reporting bullying, assigned seating on buses when necessary, etc.

Create environments in schools where this is a safe topic of discussion. Allow for students to ask questions and build a repertoire of resources to allow students to learn more about their questions. Make sure the environment does not single students out, but instead includes all students with an opportunity to learn about what they may already know or not know.

If a school is not culturally proficient in regards to bullying, it will be difficult to be culturally proficient in regards to sexual orientation. Begin also with listening and learning. Create a climate of acceptance, affirming the dignity of students. Clear policies against harmful slurs are a must.

I think we need to be aware of the many languages of our students. In many experiences I find English and Spanish is much of what is offered to our students. We need to know how to provide relevant material to students in whatever language they speak. We need to give them time to learn (read and write) in that language and we need to have resources available to communicate with families in their native language.
