Marvels competitors are DC Comics. There are good and bad sides of this competitiveness. Some of the advantages are that it will bring out the best in both production companies, helping them create their best material. Another is that both Marvel and DC can gain free advertising through each others productions as some of the most recent films do mention the competition in some way or another. However, a disadvantage of this is that Marvel could steal from DC's fan base and vice versa, creating a negative impact on Box Office figures for both.

There is a short snappy scene where you can only see Deadpool's silhouette, this is purely to exaggerate the fact that he carries two large Katana's as his weapons to appeal to fans of the comics as he carries the same weapons in the comics, this silhouette is created by using the lighting technique called ‘backlight’. Low-key lighting is used in the depressing/sad scenes. One example is when Wade is telling Copycat about the extent of his cancer and trying to joke about it. This is common throughout the trailer - whenever there is a sad scene the lighting tends to be low-key. This is to portray the darkness that comes along with the situation as low-key lighting helps minimise distractions in the frame to help guide the audience's eyes where the director wants them to be. Low-key lighting is also used when Wade reveals his disfigured face to his friend Weasel, this is so the audience can't help but stare at his face as there is nothing going on in the background. The use of Low-key lighting has a negative impact on the audience as it is isolating and can make the audience feel uneasy, which is why it is used in dramatic scenes because the audience can then feel exactly how the characters may be feeling. During this scene, hard lighting is also used to add definition to Wade’s face to exaggerate the effect to the audience. There is also a considerable amount of natural lighting evident in the trailer. Whether the lighting was all natural or just made to look natural, there was a lot of it. The reason behind using natural lighting is to brighten up the scene and make light of some gruesome scenes such as the highway scene where Deadpool kills a lot of Ajax’s men. If these scenes had any other lighting, the impact on the audience would be stronger however because the lighting is so bright, it will create a lighter, less tension-filled atmosphere for the audience. Additionally, the natural lighting adds realism to the scenes, as fighting on a highway with nothing but a back-lighting would look unnatural.

As well as different types of lighting in the trailer there is also a range of different angled shots ranging from wide angle to close-ups. The scene mentioned above where Wade reveals his face uses both low-key lighting and a close-up angle (which is one of some camera techniques used throughout the trailer), this is to really exaggerate and show the audience Weasels reaction to Wade's new look. Also during this scene, the camera technique shot reverse shot is used to show the conversation from both sides as you can see the matching eye line between the 2 characters, which suggests they are in deep conversation and are really paying attention to what the other person is saying. The scene where Deadpool is on a highway attacking men who work for his enemy is a high, wide angled shot to show the amount of power Deadpool actually has, and that one man has created so much damage and destruction in such a small amount of time. The opposite of this is shown later on in the trailer. When the audience is introduced to Colossus it is a low-angle shot and is also in the P.O.V of Wade, this portrays that Wade has minimal power over Colossus as he towers over him in the shot.

Several more camera techniques are used throughout the trailer for many different reasons. Symmetry is a popular technique used in the trailer, this is where scenes are uniformed and match on either side, however, in the trailer the symmetry tends to be from a character being exactly in the middle of the shot. It’s mostly used during dramatic scenes as symmetry creates a sense of unity and strength which will help portray the seriousness in the scene. One example of a sequence of shots where symmetry is used is when Wade is being trailed into a murky medical facility, by using this technique it makes the shot aesthetically pleasing as well as ensuring the audience will only focus on Wade and what he is saying and nothing else. In these scenes, there is also a technique called tracking used. This will impact the audience by making them feel as though they are apart of the film as they are following Wade as the camera moves with the stretcher that he is on, implying that the audience is going on a journey with him. One specific shot in this sequence is slightly different to the rest as it isn't a tracking shot but a high wide-angle shot. This is purely to help establish the scene without and convey to the audience that Wade is in a bad place without giving too much away. Another type of camera technique used is close-ups which are used on a mass scale during the trailer. The main reason behind this is to make the emotions of the characters faces seen, the whole point of a trailer is to encourage people to watch a film, and by showing emotions to the audience they can gain a connection with the cast, therefore enticing them into watching Deadpool when it is released in the cinema. Over-the-shoulder (OTS) shots are used during every conversation throughout the trailer, the reason behind this is to ensure the audience feels involved (just like with the tracking shot) as it gives them a P.O.V from a character's perspective. Lastly, right at the end of the film, there is a final close-up of Deadpool where he looks deadpan into the camera and speaks, breaking the fourth wall. This impacts the audience in the way that they will connect with Deadpool and side with him throughout the film as he shows that he is approachable, friendly and a nice guy, and not someone who you should dislike.

The editing in the trailer is quite consistent. The majority of the trailer contains fast paced editing which is when the footage chops and changes between scenes quite often. This is typical of the superhero genre. In the Deadpool trailer, there is no footage that lasts more than 5 seconds before a cut is added. In the hospital scene where Deadpool goes to transform there is evidence of flash cutting. Flash cutting is the same as fast paced editing but even shorter in time, to the point where the scenes just look like flashes as they last no longer than 2 seconds. The flash cutting is a technique used as well as Elliptical editing to apply tension to the video. This is because the scenes shown in the video get cut off before anything that is shown can be explained, suggesting to the audience there is more to the story and leaving the with unanswered questions. This is one way of enticing a larger audience as people will want explanations as to what they saw in the trailer.

There is no evidence of any cross-cutting in the trailer, which tends to be a popular editing technique in most action trailers, instead, the trailer consists of little segments that show smaller stories from in the film such as the highway scene. There is no flicking between sequences and it is more consistent and flows quite smooth, despite the flash editing. The trailer itself portrays the story rather well to allow viewers to get the gist of what Deadpool is actually about and imply that the trailer is different to most action trailers because Deadpool is not like most action movies. As the trailer shows some of the scenes that happen in the film it is obvious that the whole feature length scene isn’t shown, to cut down the event so it takes up less time but still flows seamless/invisible editing is used which is where cuts are still used but in a way that the audience does not consciously notice them.

The Marvel logo is used towards the beginning of the trailer. This is so the audience can identify what type of film Deadpool is. The Marvel logo is recognised around the world for its actions movies, so including the logo is a quick and easy way of promoting the genre of the film. The logo itself is bold and thick, making it impossible to miss if you consider the use of contrasting colours of white writing on a bright red background. By including a large version of the logo in the trailer, it will help Deadpool attract a larger audience as those who didn’t know Deadpool was a Marvel character from the comics will become aware of this fact while watching the trailer. Marvel are renowned for their action films, therefore encouraging people to go watch the film when it is released as they will expect great things from it if it's anything like previous Marvel movies.

The Deadpool logo is also featured towards the end of the film, once again this is mainly to establish the fact that the film is based on the Deadpool comics to inform and attract a wider audience. The Deadpool logo consists of a similar, but shorter font to that of the Marvel logo and the writing is red instead of white. The slight similarities between the Marvel and Deadpool logo are noticeable which is a great way of bringing both Marvel and Deadpool fans together. The red colour of the logo connotes the amount of blood that is shed in the film, alerting viewers that the film will be gruesome. The edges of the logo are also worn away and uneven, this could be a way of representing the scars on Deadpool's face, or it could even connote that there is a battle going on and the effects of said battle are very much visible throughout the film. When both the Marvel and Deadpool logo is shown in the trailer, it is the only thing on the screen. There is no background, just the logo, this is to ensure that viewers are not distracted by what could be happening in the background and miss the logos as they are only on for a brief amount of time.

It is obvious from the trailer that the Deadpool movie is a blockbuster as it has a rather easy storyline to follow, meaning even though the target audience is predominantly young males, the film as a whole is aimed at the general masses because of how easy the storyline is to follow.

A storyboard is a sequence of drawings with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a film or television production. Storyboards are not always stuck too and generally are not followed frame by frame. They are to give the crew an idea of what is needed when it comes to equipment, cast, location etc, they are also used to give investors a good idea of what the film would become which is why some storyboards are very detailed. Here is a video showing parts of Deadpool's initial storyboard.

When it comes to casting in Hollywood producers start by making a list of actors they would like to feature in the film while taking the budget into consideration. For example if a movie is low-budget you obviously wouldn't expect Leonardo Dicaprio as the star of the film. Then producers would discuss this list with casting directors and narrow it down depending on their knowledge of certain actors schedules as the producer of Deadpool would of course wanted to cast some of the biggest actors for this highly-anticipated Marvel film. After they narrow down the list they would then audition the actors who they believe are suitable and chose someone from their performance.

Deadpool was edited using the latest version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC on Mac computers. The visual effects for the film were produced by Digital Domain, Atomic Fiction, Blur Studio, Weta Digital, Rodeo FX, Luma Pictures, and Image Engine. For example Digital Domain was responsible for creating the majority of the Colossus effects. The entire opening title sequence of the film is made entirely from CGI. Positioned all the people and the car and built the CGI up from there. Blur Studio were behind this scene where essentially it's one action-packed frozen scene.
For an earlier freeway battle, Atomic Fiction created the vehicles and their interiors as well as some green screen shots like when the stuntmen had to ride green screen rigs to simulate riding a motorcycles. The green screen shoots also involved stunts for the part of the opening sequence where one of the thugs hangs off the back of the car. This scene started with a man on a treadmill, scraping the ground as he went along. However for scenes that were too dangerous to be performed by people, even with using rigs and mock-ups were captured on a motion capture stage with thugs and Deadpool made entirely from CGI.

Once there is a good idea of what scenery is needed in scenes then the search for the ideal location starts. There are people specifially for this role and they are known as 'Location Scouts'. During there search they also keep there eye out for any locations that are unique or interesting that they could log incase of future requests.

A script always starts off just as an initial idea/ concept produced by a screenwrite and script development is the stages in-between that concept becoming a final shooting script. Many people have a say on the script and influence it in different ways. It is a process of trial and error with people constantly reworking the material and trying story lines from different angles by adding and cutting material along the way until everyone part of the script writing process is happy with the final product. This development is important as it a way of making a good quality film within a budget as being able to control what happens in the film allows you to control the amount of money that needs to be spent on it.

The Target Audience for Deadpool is Straight Males as the film contains a lot of action and violence that generally relates more with Men then Women. It's aimed at ages between 15 - 30. I suggested the minimum age of 15 as the films certificate is rated a 15 in the UK and most men start losing their relaxed sense of humour after the age of 30 and may not appreciate the crude humour used throughout the film. Seeing as Deadpool was shown in cinemas all around the world, I would say that there was not one certain location that their target audience is situated in but rather spread all over the world. Also the fact that one of the characters is Indian opens up the film to people from the middle east and around that area.

Poster Analysis

This poster helps to reflect Deadpool's target audience. There is a sense of violence mixed in with humour as the image is a full body shot of Deadpool where he is wearing his superhero suit, as well as sporting his weapons and a pink backpack which you would normally see on a child. There is a sense of irony in this as Deadpool is carrying highly dangerous weapons while wearing something an innocent child would wear. This suggests to the audience that this film is not aimed at younger people and contains quite sinister humour that some people may find offensive. The background colour of the poster is white to highlight the character and direct all the attention to the main image of the product which is a long shot of Deadpool. Although you can't see his eyes, it is obvious he is making eye contact, creating a connection with the audience. High Key lighting is used to draw more attention to Deadpool and to add height to the character but to also help distinguish this colours of his costume as they are rather dark. This is rather uncommon in other superhero advertisements making Deadpool stand out from other heroes. The black and red theme of the costume is continued into the slogan to the right of the image to add consistency to the design and to target fans of the comic books as this combination of colours will appeal to them and catch their eyes. The colour scheme (red & black) of the poster connotes death, danger, and even love, giving the audience an inkling into the contents of the film. The use of a plain white background is to help capture the dark colour scheme used for Deadpool's costume as well as the text as the light colour helps the darkness stand out, suggesting Deadpool’s darkness also comes out throughout the film. In addition, the solid white background is also to guarantee there are no distractions so the audience focuses just on Deadpool and the tag-line.

The Deadpool Logo is a separate colour and font to the tagline above it. This is so the logo stands out from the rest of the text as it is the main part people need to see as the whole point of the posters is to advertise the new film, but that will not happen if the logo is not obvious. The logo is also the same so colour and Deadpool’s super suit as mentioned briefly before, this is because the black and red colours are Deadpool's brand Identity which means whenever Deadpool’s target audience sees these colours, they instantly relate them to the franchise. Deadpool is a part of the Marvel franchise, and because Marvel is notorious for its excellent content, the poster purposely includes a minute Marvel logo that is easily distinguishable despite its small size. These two factors will mainly appeal to fans of the Deadpool’s comics as the logo just screams Deadpool.

'Bad Ass. Smart Ass. Great Ass.' is a very quick way of summing up the film and informing the audience of what to expect from the film as the words are telling people that Deadpool is an action/comedy movie. The tagline of this poster also makes a joke. It starts off serious then turns into a direct reference to Deadpool's bottom that he is showing off with the pose he pulls. Deadpool poses this way to represent the term ‘Great Ass‘ which is part of the poster's tagline. However, by doing this, Deadpool is breaking the fourth wall which is where the character is aware of himself and the audience, which explains why Deadpool looks directly ahead in his stance. This technique allows a connection to be made with the audience as the audience will feel directly affected because they will automatically feel like they are part of the movie. Breaking the fourth wall, however, is also a way of the poster reaching out to Deadpool comic books fans as the character constantly breaks the wall throughout the comic book series too. Also, by using the word Ass, it shows that the film is targeting older teenagers and not young children due to the use of the mild swear word.

The body language Deadpool is portraying in the poster has more than one meaning. Yes, it does represent the phrase ‘Great Ass’ but it also has a few extra possible meanings. The fact that you cannot see Deadpool’s face and he is looking at his back can suggest to the audience that he needs to constantly watch his back for trouble. This could also represent how he got stabbed in the back by his self-proclaimed nemesis Ajax. The fact that Deadpool’s body language can portray so many different possible theories will appeal to the audience as they would want to find out whether he is stood like that for comedic purposes or because he is in danger.

The use of the language code of repetition of the word ‘Ass’ makes the phrase very catchy, and people will relate this funny phrase to Deadpool. Because of the use of repetition, the tagline sounds like a rhyme even though there are no rhyming words evident, this is when the phrase becomes an Assonance where the sound of words resembles each other, so in this case, the repeated use of ‘Ass’ makes the entire tagline sound similar. These language codes are put in specifically to appeal to the target audience of young people, as using short, snappy phrases is a very current form of language as it is as close as you can get to using actual colloquial language without actually using it.

When it comes to the mode of address used in the poster, it is informal as the date of the film's release is shortened. Instead of saying February, the poster just says Feb. Another example of the use of the colloquial language is the word ‘Ass’ that is repeated three times. In countries, particularly America ‘Ass’ is classed as a slang term with youths so by using this word, it will appeal more to Deadpool’s main target of a young audience as they can relate to the language used.

Lastly age 15 and 18 certificates means you can only gain access to them films if you are 15/18 or older. These certificates are important as they help people get an understanding of what will be shown in the film, whether is will contain offensive languages or violent scenes etc.

Hypodermic Needle Theory is when the audience takes in exactly what they are being told and accepts it all without questioning it. This is clear in movies such as 'Bridget Jones's Diary' where you can sit and watch the film and just take it in without having to think about what is happening/just happened. Films like 'Inception' however don't exactly follow the Hypodermic Needle Theory as you could just watch it and not think about it but the film would not make much sense, you need to question and challenge the film to be able to make sense of it.

In relation to the Hyperdermic Needle Theory and Moral Panic Deadpool could be a negative influence on people as he is an Anti-Hero as he is the main character of the story but he doesn't most conventional heroic traits. He is not evil but also does not always do good. In the film there is a montage which consists of just Deadpool going out and killing multiple people who are linked to Ajax. If people believe in the Hypodermic Needle Theory and watch this movie they may believe what Deadpool does is decent and ok as he is portrayed as a Hero even though he is not. If they saw a 'good guy' doing it they may think they could do the same. It is rather extreme but more than possible. Throughout the whole film you support Deadpool in his actions and decisions and do not really question it, this is a perfect example of the Hyperdermic Needle Theory. In relation to Morale Panic; Deadpool is classed an an Anti-villain so he isn't bad but he does not always do good and if people started living like him crime rates and the way people treat others will start to change in a negative way. China banned Deadpool from being released in its country out of fear of morale panic as there is so much graphic content, sex and nudity featured in the movie.

This is one of the scenes that I knew straight away could be an ethical issue. In this scene Deadpool is caught masturbating. This act alone is considered a mature thing to do and if this was shown to an audience filled with a 12A audience parents would not be happy as they may have not even spoke to their children about sexual acts yet as they are still too young. This scene may confuse some children and spark them to ask unwanted questions to their parents and possibly even mimic what they see as Deadpool is actually masturbating to a unicorn. This could easily come across as a light form of pedophilia as a unicorn is a stereotypical toy for young girls to play with and Deadpool masturbating to one could come across in a rather bad way. This is why the film is shown to only a 15 audience and above as this age is the age of young adulthood where the young people are aware of this kind of sexual act.

This is another scene that may raise ethical issues. This scene shows Deadpool and his girlfriend having sex throughout different events of the year. This scene would be inappropriate as it is not a dismissible scene as it is a sex montage. Also, like the masturbating scene, if this film had a certificate of 12A it may cause children to ask questions and inquisitive to what is happening and think it is ok to do as the superhero and main character of the film is doing it. Also the fact that if the film was a 12A it would mean some children younger than 12 could be watching making it even worse at it could be deemed upsetting as in the 'strap-on scene' above you can see that Deadpool is in pain. Even though their is minimal nudity throughout the scene, several different sexual acts are played out which are very inappropriate themselves. Also Deadpool is advertised as a Superhero film and if it was a 12A parents would happily take there children and would not be made aware of the full extent of the sexual acts shown in the film until they appeared in the film despite the very basic warning at the beginning of the movie. This is why you only expect films in films rated age 15 and above as at this age people are sexually aware and will understand the context of this scene. In some countries however this film has been banned as this type of scene is not in line with ethic norms of their country.

In this third example it may bring up both legal and ethical issues. The most obvious is the ethical problems in this scene as the way he mocks his roomate 'Blind Al's' disability may cause offence to viewers who are either blind or know someone who is blind as Deadpool can be quite harsh. During this scene Deadpool says to Al "Listen, Al, if I never see you again, I want you to know that I love you very much. I also buried 1600 kilos of cocaine somewhere in the apartment, right next to the cure for blindness." Clearly mocking Al's lack of sight could be portrayed as harsh and inconsiderate as well as offensive to the blind. As well as mocking Al in the quote above Deadpool also mentions how he has a stash of class A drugs hidden in the apartment. Yes it is clear that this is not true as it is just a film this may not be clear to a 12A audience as at that age they are very easily influenced, whereas people ages 15 and over are less likely to be negatively influence by this. Also when Deadpool says this he says it so nonchalantly making seem like it is a normal thing to say and if/when parents laugh at this joke the children may not realise the legality of cocaine and that it is a drug and may repeat what Deadpool says as a joke without realising how it could be misiterpreted when said to the wrong person making it a possible legal issue.

In this scene Deadpool is seen impaling another man using 2 katanas and lift him into the air while saying a joke, comparing the man to a shish kebab. Just the impaling alone is extremely violent as there is no hesitation which will be why this scene is considered a 15 not a 12A. Then with the added comment on the end it shows that Deadpool feels no regret or sorrow for what he had just done. One legal issue is that knifes and firearms are prohibited in many countries and in this scene Deadpool is laced with illegal weapons, even though this film is based in the USA where firearms are legal, it is still not condoned in most countries of the world, therefore becoming a major issue. An ethical issue with this scene is that Deadpool does not know this man he does not know wether he is a bad guy or not, many could argue although he is attacking Deadpool it doesn't automatically mean he is a villain because protecting Ajax is his job, it is what he gets paid to do.

It is a scene where a man gets shot in the head from a close range by Deadpool and brain matter is all over the floor. As there is so much graphic violence in the film, the movie could not possibly be a 12A as it would be too gruesome to show such young people as people younger than 12 would be able to watch the film, making them susceptible to extremely bad language which is featured in this scene. blood and lots of murder which is both legally and ethically wrong.

Stuart Hall came up with a theory that audiences could only respond to a media text in 3 different ways. There is the preferred theory which is when the audience interprets the text exactly how the producers intend it to. Then there is Negotiated theory which is where the audience is not sure how they should be receiving the content they are seeing and end up negotiating with themselves wether they are taking the content in the right way or the wrong way. Finally the Oppositional theory is when you completely reject the content and the producers intentions.
One example of Stuart Halls' Reception Theory in Deadpool is Deadpool as a character and his personality. Deadpool is the main character of this movie, making him the opinion leader as he is a Superhero, however he is not a Hero but is in fact more of an Anti-Villain when you consider his reckless, anti-social, extremely violent behaviour but this can be viewed in the 3 different ways mentioned above. Some people may see Deadpool and automatically agree that he is a superhero as he goes after villains, has a costume and is great at fighting and defending. These people would be the preferred audience. Then if people watched this film and questioned Deadpools heroic-ness and actually considered him an Anti-Villain they would fall under the category of the Negotiated Audience. Lastly if viewers seen Deadpools character and all the bad things he does and cannot even think of him as a hero, but more of a villain/bad guy they would fall under the Oppositional theory which is not what a producer wants.

The 2 step flow model is made up of opinion leaders and individuals that are in social contact with the opinion leaders. This is where the opinion leaders share their opinions, which the audience (who are passive) then take into consideration everything that is being told to them. This applies to Deadpool becuase as viewers we are naturally more likely to watch a film that an opinion leader has spoken highly about and rated well. This also works the opposite way too, if an Opinion Leader does not rate a film, audiences are less likely to watch it.
When it comes to Deadpool, most of the opinion leaders were from the media, such as Newspapers and social media. With all the advertisements, the comic book series, and positive newspaper & magazine articles, the good reviews and ratings spread world wide.

In Deadpool violence is glamourised throughout the film by the constant use of humour during any scenes of violence. He uses light humour to soften a dark scene. One example of this is during the motorway scene where he violently impales a man with two katanas, it is a very violent scene but it is softened afterwards when Deadpool says 'Like a Fucking shish kebab', making a joke about the situation. Deadpool uses violence in his film to get to where he wants to be - in Ajax' company however in some circumstances he just uses violence because he finds it fun, creating a negative impact on the audience as it could possibly lead to moral panic.
Personally, I think the use of violence in cinema is neither a good or bad thing. It is something that is just expected in todays movies. However, I do have a problem with it when things become to graphic or offensive, but at the same time I also thing graphic scenes are suitable for cinema as long as it is something made extremely clear and is only featured in suitable aged films such as 15+.

Deadpool is an action/superhero movie created by Marvel but its trailer isn't like most other Marvel trailers. Deadpool fits into the genre of both action and comedy making the film quite 'Slapstick'. This is evident through the crude humour and use of hip-hop music instead of the stereotypical superhero music used throughout the trailer. Hip-hop music is used because it is considered a masculine genre, as it tends to be rather misogynistic meaning it will appeal to the target audience of young men rather than women. This also makes people aware that this movie is nothing like any other Marvel movie and it is going to be unique. With the film being Marvel, who are known for its comic books which are traditionally read by young males, the film will once again target Deadpool's specific audience of Males.

Using a mixture of both handheld, rough camera shots and fast cut editing the trailer makes the film seem exciting and action-packed as it directly involves the audience are in the middle of the action, particularly during the fight scenes. These camera techniques are typical in most action films, making people aware what they should expect the film to be full of action. Fighting is shown in this trailer as this is something that appeals to men as one again it’s another thing that is stereotypically something young men would get involved in and get a thrill from.

I believe this trailer and movie is aimed at men between the ages of 15-30 due to the fact that the film is full of action with the presence of guns, violence and torture scenes which is a predominantly male genre of film. Also, the humour used is aimed at adults, so young children wouldn't understand the comedy aspect of the film.

This trailer shows that Deadpool is not like the other superheroes but there is one trait that Deadpool has just like any other hero - a superhero suit. Deadpool's suit is red which may represent anger as the film is about a man on a revenge mission, but it could also represent the danger he is subject to during his search for his enemy Ajax. The red colour could also represent the romantic undertone of the movie, it isn't specifically a romantic film but it is based on Wade seeking revenge so he can reunite with his girlfriend Copycat again.

Most superhero films have a male protagonist character like Deadpool, which therefore targets a male audience, however, in the male protagonist in Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds who is considered a heartthrob in Hollywood, which will also appeal to a female audience as they would love to see him in action.
