In Reyna Grande's memoir A Dream Called Home, she speaks about her life and how the abuse and trauma she has faced affects her in her university and adult days. She speaks how even after all those setbacks and hard times she got back up on her feet and paved a way for her to be successful with a loving family that she created. Reyna's parents had both left her when she was young, her father going to the US for work and her mother leaving for another man. Her mother would go back to them for some time and then leave again, so the abandonment didn't happen just once or twice but more than it should. Being abandoned many times will cause you to fell shame, unloved and unimportant.

In this report, Is Rejection Parental Abandonment or Neglect a Trigger for Higher Perceived Shame and Guilt in Adolescents, states "Parental rejection is a highly traumatic experience for a child, as it implies a lack of interest and affection from the parent or caregiver. This can lead to both physical and psychological damage, as the child may feel unloved or unwanted." As a result from this statement, you can see that a parent's lack of love and attention will cause damage to a child making them feel "unloved or unwanted" and can lead to depression and rebellious acts.

A child wouldn't feel rejected through implications. They are still people and people have brains and they can comprehend when they are being rejected or not.

"These children are simply the products of their environment." If you live in a bad environment, an abusive environment, you will react a certain way. A child grows and needs to develop skills to be a stable person but they must be taught in order to be that. If they are surrounded by instability, they will be unstable. They will become a rebellious, a brat, and most stereotyped, a bully to others or the bullied.

In A Dream Called Home, Reyna has a sister named Betty. Reyna takes her in since she knows she needs to leave the abusive and toxic home she is in. Their mother insults her and makes sure Betty knows that she believes her to be a disappointment, that she's a troublemaker. Their mother isn't the nicest person at all, she for starters abandoned them more than once. Betty's actions support the Riddle's article because she grew up in a hostile environment with absent parents. Betty would often ditch class, drink, drugs, anything a "rebellious teen" would do. The verbal abuse Betty faces has affected the way she acts.

A child can think for their own. When they are sad, they cry. When they are mad, they will throw a tantrum. It is normal for kids to be a little bit of a brat or rebel. That does not mean that they grew up or are in a hostile and abusive environment. Riddle says that the a child is a product of their environment but what if they are in a big wealthy home? They always have food, toys, and friends over. They are taken care of by their hired nanny or butler. It isn't hostile so a child shouldn't be a "rebel" or "brat" because of abuse.

In Matthews' article, Dysfunctional Families and their Psychological Effects, it states that growing up in a dysfunctional or abusive family will leave a child emotionally scarred. There are different types of abuse and dysfunctions that a child's family can have to lead to psychological effects such as depression, anxiety, insecurity, and intoxication. Being abused in childhood can also lead to you being the abuser and abused again as an adult with your significant other. Matthews also states that "Children are forced to accommodate and enable chaotic, unstable/unpredictable and unhealthy behaviors of parents." Children have no say in a parent's actions so if they are "accustomed" or "used" to the way the act, they will begin to think that it is normal and "healthy" because that is what they know and all they have ever seen and dealt with.

Even now, what is "healthy" is more something that you can assume and take as. Everyone has different definitions of "healthy".

In Grande's memoir, she speaks about her the abuse in her childhood she had to deal with and how it has affected her in her adult life. Well, she implies and has multiple times expressed how she has a negative outlook on who she is. Verbal abuse is one she had to deal with and handle growing up. The belittlement can lead to anxiety and insecurities as a child up to adulthood. Reyna had met a girl who was completely dressed up in her culture. She had the full outwear and she spoke with her friends with no shame but with full confidence. Reyna questions it because it was so out of the norm for her. Reyna has never felt such confidence for who she is and who she came from so when she saw someone who was exactly that, she couldn't help but question why.

In this article, The Effects of Physical Abuse on Children's Social Relationships, they speak about how the abuse children undergo will affect a child in their social life. They stated, "Avoidant social behavior also seems to be problematic for abused children." When children are abused, they tend to be more shy with others, especially with people bigger than them. "Abused children have been found to be more withdrawn and to show more internalizing problem behaviors." An example of internalizing problem behaviors would be being socially withdrawn. Avoiding anything that has to do with socializing with another person. Not only are they affected at home with the abuse, but with their peers as well. They can't be "normal" and socialize and have fun like the rest of the kids. They cannot excel. Children develop and excel when they are able to socialize with other kids their age. If they cannot do that because of the abuse they face, they will not be able to properly develop and grow as a person.

Reyna Grande struggles to keep a good relationship with males. She is always going for someone who reminds her of her father. Like the older man who made his own home, surrounded by trees, and had kids. She liked how he had a dream and how he had made that dream a reality. She was envious of it and it reminded her of how her own father wanted to make his own house as well. In her first relationship, she didn't want to be as intimate as her partner did but she did because she felt that she had to. She is used to doing things she doesn't like and letting others walk over her because her own family, he father and mother did. Her father was an alcoholic abuse so dealing with the beatings and verbal abuse was normal, so when a guy said some sweet words and just did what he wanted, she was okay with it.
