As always for every lab, the first step is to put on safety goggles to ensure no risk of injuries and to turn on the heating plate so that heating would occurrapidly when ready.

Secondly, we grabbed the flask, beaker, and watch glass and headed over to where the salt was located. We took note of the weight of the watch glass and beaker for later reference. After the crucial step of pressing zero immediately after placing the flask on the scale, we used the spoon to pour about 1-2 grams of the salt into the flask.

While one person was retrieving the salt, another went to the sink and carefully filled the graduated cylinder with about 25 mL of water.

Next, the water was then combined with the salt in the flask. At that time, a hand was placed over the top of the flask to mix the water and salt together. Once the salt seemed to be dissolved, the mixture was then poured into the empty beaker. A watch glass was thereafter put over the top of the beaker.

Next comes the essential part of this experiment: boiling the the water. So, the beaker was then placed on the pre-heated heating plate. Soon, the water started to bubble and eventually the water will evaporate, leaving behind more or less solid units of salt than before.

We then used the tongs to remove the extremely hot beaker from the heating plate. After waiting a couple minutes for the beaker to cool down, we took both the beaker and the watch glass (because it had excess salt on it) over to the electronic balance to figure out the amount of salt after the boiling.

Recrystallization is one way of isolating an ionic compound from a solution. If several ionic compounds are present in an aqueous solution, then a precipitation reaction may be performed to remove the unwanted ions. In this experiment, a known amount of NaCl will be dissolved in some water, and then recrystallized by boiling off the water.

3. Percent errors could possibly be negative instead of positive if simple errors such as weighing or contamination mishaps take place. A negative percent error indicates that you gained more salt than you started with.

The ESLR's addressed in this activity were " locate, interpret, evaluate, organize, process and present information using technology or appropriate resources," "synthesize the information, skills and concepts acquired through the curriculum," and "work well with others." " Locate, interpret, evaluate, organize, process and present information using technology or appropriate resources" took place in this activity because we had to think about what we were doing before taking action. Many things could go wrong in this experiment so it was important to be focused and organized. "Synthesize the information, skills and concepts acquired through the curriculum" was also a ESLR because in order to understand this lab, we must recall all the information taught to us and draw new conclusions and predictions based off the trials. The final ESLR in this lab was "work well with others" because fundamentally, this was a group experiment and having the ability to work with others ensured a safe and proper experiment.

1.This was answered with the table with the results of the experiment for the lab.

2. The causes of the salt being reduced is probably because of when you pour it into the beaker,

some of the salt water may be still inside the flask. Another reason is because when the salt

water is being boiled on the heating plate, some of the salt actually sticks to the watch glass that

covers the top of the beaker. The salt sticks to the watch glass because when the steam rises, it

creates water droplets on the watch glass and once the salt starts to pop and recrystallize they

stick onto the water.
