What About Chad?

In the course I took, there was a scenario about a boy named "Chad" who was very smart but was introverted. He didn't always snap the answer at the immediately so in return the teacher gave him a hard time. I know at times I do not give the proper wait time. If I were to talk to Chad’s teacher, I would recommend that he give Chad a little more time to think and possibly tell him ahead of time what the question was going to be, so that Chad would have enough time to formulate a solid answer.

How does it feel to be an introvert in today's fast- paced classroom?

How does it feel to be an introvert in today's classroom? Do we allow enough wait time as teachers when doing question/answer time? Are students to working individually or are they always working in groups? Do we provide time for structured quiet? Susan Cain has some good points when she states that 1. We need to stop the constant group work. 2. Go to the wilderness… get inside your own heads a little more often. 3. Think about the things that are important to you and why they are important (paraphrase).
Reflection

As an introvert myself, I understand how it feels to be rushed and not able to come up with a clever answer right away. As I go into this next school year, I will continue to be reminded that I need to have quiet time in my classroom. I need to wait to call on students so that those introverted and reluctant students have an opportunity to think through an answer before being forced to answer. I will continue to mix activities throughout the day to have some group work and some independent work to satisfy both sides of the introvert/extrovert spectrum. I hope to provide a safe and happy classroom this year!
