My name, Sheung Yee Chau, was translated from my Chinese name, 周上兒. Although the direct translation of my name is "up child", it is supposed to mean "a gift from God". As suggested by the meaning of my name, I was given this name because my Christian parents' beliefs. The name "Sheung Yee" is a constant reminder of my brother who has a similar name. My last name, Chau, is one of the many spellings of 周. This particular spelling of 周 originated from Hong Kong and it reminds me of where I am from.

You may have noticed that my name is extremely unique. Other than my brother, I have never met anyone who had a first name like mine. During my time in elementary school I strongly disliked my name. Students and teachers would constantly spell and pronounce my name wrong. They always spelled "Sheng" instead of "Sheung" and "Yi" instead of "Yee". Moving onto middle school I started to accept my name. I stopped caring when others pronounced or spelled my name wrong. In fact, I was impressed at the different ways people were able to spell and pronounce my name. The reason I changed was because I realised that my name was difficult to spell and pronounce. The name Sheung Yee is special to me because I think it fits who I am. The name also reminds me of where I come from.
