I think a great way to incorporate poetry into my grade level (4th grade) is by giving my students an opportunity to be creative and create a poem about something that interests them. I would keep the requirements minimal and then allow students to express themselves following the guidelines but otherwise give them the freedom to write and incorporate pictures in whatever way they want for their interests. Another way is to give them options for subject area projects like history, science, or math that showcases their knowledge of a topic through poetry in a creative way.

Most songs we see throughout history are based from poems or other pieces of writing. For example: The star spangled banner…aka the national anthem. I would have them write a poem based on a world event we learned in the unit similar to how others once did.
