I made this the title of chapter 17 because this is when Mustapha Mond, the controller of the world state, was showing John all of his books from the old world such as the Bible, and other religious and philosophical books. This shows that the controller (the equivalent to a president or country leader) knows about the past. In this chapter they also discuss why they don't release this information to the public and why they don't worship "God" or talk about him.

After reading all of the books, why doesn't the controller feel the need to rebel? Were Controllers specially conditioned to deal with this information? Why does he get to see it if they want to completely expunge these old ideas?

The theme for this book is probably convenience over virtue. This can be seen throughout the book with the convenience of conditioning where everyone is happy where they are because they were made to be happy when people should have the freedom to choose what they want to do. This is also evident in the fact that when anything is broken or ripped, instead of fixing it, they simply throw it away and buy a new one. Their whole society is built on convenience and happiness while ignoring morality and virtues.
