This lino print came from a design that meshed the rubbings I did with the patterns on my guitar. This ended up looking like an emblem and had quite a calligraphic quality to it.

Here, I experimented by digitally tracing the rubbings I made to create a sharper version. I considered Lay-out carefully in this image and think that the result is very successful. This piece inspired the direction for the rest of my project. I love the boldness and contrast created by digitising the rubbings I took, however I am interested to explore how I can emulate this through hand printed designs and more spontaneous layout. I also want to consider a bigger size for my final piece as I think that would work well with the designs.

Absolute fail!! I tried to experiment with new materials in preparation for the exhibition by using a black sheet and bleach in my Lino blocks instead of ink.
I tried using various amounts of dilution, leaving the blocks for different amounts of time and applying less/more bleach, however the outcome was not what I was looking for.

Another image of the failed bleach printing. I think the texture that the bleach created is actually pretty unique and interesting, it kind of looks like the sheet is mouldy. I think this technique could work as a layer in a mixed media piece or something, however this is not what I was going for so I decided to ditch the idea in favour of something that would make a clearer more detailed piece for the exhibition.

Final Exhibited Piece

This is my final exhibited piece.
I printed using my Lino blocks onto an A2 piece of white card. I wanted to be intuitive and spontaneous with my block placement to avoid overthinking the layout. I also experimented with ink application onto the blocks, adding more ink to some prints for a more blotchy effect and less onto others to make it more scratchy and faded. I think this worked well as I has to think on the spot and go with my initial vision for which blocks looked best well. I feel that I elevated the digital version by repeating the patterns some more.
I think that upon reflection, the thing that I would change about this final piece is that I would have loved to create larger Lino blocks to print with if I had a larger timeframe and more money for supplies. I think that a larger scale would just enhance the power of the piece overall and would have allowed me to insert more fine details into each block.
I really enjoy the look of lino printing and loved the process of making it.
Exhibition wise, my work was easy to adapt to the exhibition space and worked well within its context given its size and placement.

Another attempt to use the fabric sheet to print on. This time I used a yellow acrylic paint. I think again, the outcome is visually interesting as a part of a bigger mixed media, texture oriented piece but it isn’t the effect I want for my exhibition.

Object Rubbings

Taking rubbings of objects in my room using a graphite stick. I chose a selection of objects that were both mundane - such as a hairbrush, electric fan and a rubbish bin, as well as objects that were more decorative such as a jewellery box and a piggy bank. I was surprised that the textures I ended up finding the most visually interesting came from the objects that were less obviously “beautiful”.

This is a tattoo artist I follow in instagram. He prints his tattoo designs directly onto skin with lino blocks before tattooing over them. This is a section of a larger piece he made that is a composition of many lino blocks. I love the idea of having multiple smaller printed designs come together into a larger piece like this.

What do I want to map?

I began this unit trying to think about a specific place that I wanted to map - but I think this actually ended up hindering my progress as I became too obsessive about a specific place. After my tutorial, I think that I will actually get more out of the project if I think of the process as the mapping rather than the place.

What processes do I want to use?

Brass rubbing.
Printmaking.
Creating repeating patterns.
Digital manipulation.

What do I want to communicate?

I want to find ways to show mundane objects and places in new and visually interesting ways. I don't want to make anything too literal - instead I want to create something new - using existing objects and creating a new map of them by transforming them through my process.

I think that the most successful part of my project was my initial decision to avoid thinking too carefully about a specific location. I think this choice meant I was able to create something much more original in the end, and was able to generate my own definition of mapping rather than recycling an already mapped location. I enjoyed experimenting with printmaking and patterns - and through this project I have realised that this is something I want to continue to work with in third year. I think given more time, I would have loved to be more experimental with the failed bleaching process, as well as larger scale lino blocks.

Overall I am pleased with my outcome and the experience of the project in general and am feeling inspired for next year.
