Í Norður-Víetnam voru kommúnistar og í suður var ekki eins mikið um kommúnisma en samt þó nokkuð. Árið 1959 ætluðu kommúnistarnir að taka yfir en Bandaríkin vildu það ekki svo þeir veittu hinum helmingnum af Suður-víetnam aðstoð gegn kommúnistunum og Norður- víetnam aðstóð kommúnismana úr suðri. Árið 1964 ákvað Lyndon B. Johnson forseti Bandaríkjanna að gera sprengju árásir á Norður-Víetnam og hann sendi líka hermenn til víetnam. Á tímabili voru hálf milljón Bandarískir hermenn í víetnam en þeir voru samt ekki að vinna því fleiri sprengjur sem Bandaríkin sprengdu því meiri stuðning fengu kommúnistar frá almenning.
