LGBT Youth Discussion by Krystal Plascencia

The authors state, “... schools can no longer ignore the presence of adolescents and young adults who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender or who are questioning their sexuality” (p. 98).

What kinds of supports have you seen in your current or previous schools toward the LGBT community? If any, would you identify them as emotional, appraisal, instrumental, or informational supports? If none, what do you think could be done to support this community?

Hello class! I hope everyone is healthy.
A support that I knew of at Imperial Valley College (the school I transferred from) was the LGBTQ+ Club. I recall that they would hold regular meetings to provide the LGBTQ+ youth that attended the college with a safe space to share their experiences, feelings, etc. They also work actively to provide information about the LGBTQ+ community. I did a bit of research to see if they were still operating and, luckily, it seems that they are still going strong. They still hold meetings via Zoom during this change to online format. I would say that a club like this could be considered an emotional, instrumental, and appraisal support. They provide a safe space, information, and affirmation for members of this community.

Hello class! I hope everyone is doing good and staying in.
A support that I knew about were the ones my classmates talked about from IVC and SDSU. As for any other school, I don't remember whether we had one at my high school. However, I do know there is the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center in El Centro. I remember learning about it from a classroom presentation and they mentioned how they had many services and they were for anyone who wanted to come in. They have a Mental Illness Support Group, 12 Step Recovery Meeting, Transgender Support, and Empowerment Support. Since this LGBT center is bigger than the ones in schools, they offered all types of support: emotional, appraisal, instrumental, and informational. I believe this type of center can be better to visit, but also harder to get to. For example, for high school students that aren't close to it, they would have to ask someone else to take them. However, if they wouldn't want anyone at school to know, this would be a safe place for them.

I attended Calexico High School from 2010-2014, and looking back I cannot recall having any real resources for LGBTQ+ students other than our school counselor. Looking at the statistics of those who were in the study, it falls in line with what their complaints in high school were: lack of support/resources. High school is a very tough time emotionally for many, as they are still trying to figure out who they are as people and how they fit into society. Why is it that there is nothing to help those questioning or struggling to come out? I feel LGBTQ+ is one of the minority groups most ignored, or at least not as recognized as other groups. All in all, as educators we have the moral responsibility to help shape and support the generations to come.

I don't really know of any support from my high school, my senior year they created a club that was to make sure no one ate lunch alone and I know some of the students who went to that club were part of the LGBTQ+ community, but it wasn't aimed specifically for them. This would be considered an emotional support because it creates a sense of community. At IVC I heard there was a club but I didn't know much about it. In SDSU I know we have the Lavender Graduation that celebrates everyone in the community who is graduating. I think this would also be emotional support. I think the community can celebrate them more, because I know in El Centro they have a pride parade, but it isn't really advertised or well known. I think making it into an actual festival that's advertised and has booths that can give out information and show services that might help them would be a great idea.

I attended Calexico High school back in 2009, and do not recall any support since the best I know to my knowledge there was no more than 5 in those communities. if someone actually did need any help or support, students can go to there school counselor, or if they needed more privacy they could always go to the districts family resource office. I am aware that there is now currently a LGBTQ and was told that the club is no larger than 5. The reason why I think that there is a lack of resource is because of our demographics where some students might be afraid to come out so young. I do recall when I attended CSULA, there was a large support where there had to be different types of programs to be able to accommodate everyone.

In fact, I didn't notice any type of school-sanctioned of LGBTQ support until I reached college. Until them, it's like schools didn't acknowledge they existed. My college had an LGBTQ group that I honestly didn't know much about. From what I recall, it provided emotional and informational supports. SDSU has a Lavender Graduation, too.

I think all of this is nice and cool, but it doesn't seem like enough to me. Support for LGBTQ students has to start before college. We have to add LGBTQ stories/histories to our core curriculum so students A. stop stigmatizing LGBTQ students and B. so our LGBTQ students can see themselves represented and know it's okay to be who they are.

I dont ever think they were acknowledged at all. We never even talked about anything like that in any classes. I remember there were many clubs but never heard of anything remotely close to an LGBTQ club. I think it is time for school to implement these types of clubs and support them more as well as implementing this in their curriculums. This is something that is more common than before and it feels like they are being ignored instead of being supported.

My first experience with this was at Imperial Valley College where I recall there being a club that supported these students and they had fundraisers to support LBTQ+ youth in the valley. I know SDSU has a Lavander Graduation as well.
Obviously, it feels like the support is minimal and it definitely should start way before students reach college. High school students need to know that they are represented and supported by their school and community in some way.

As a Highschool student I do not recall any sort if aid or appraisal given to any member of the LGBTQ+ community. However, like 3 years ago working at CHS I remember a bathroom being added for students who didn't identify with the binary genders, but it was closed recently. I would call this an instrumental aid for the members of the LGBTQ+ community. It is an instrumental form of aid due it being a tangible aid that students could use. I am not sure if they have an LGBTQ+ club and neither as to why they removed it. I actually find that a great form of help for these students. If they feel comfortable they work and are more productive.

I don’t remember the LGBT community back when I was in high school (09). No one was familiar with the term, so now you can only image how isolated this community was. When I attended IVC I didn’t hear nor knew about any LGBT community or any kind of support for them. There was no group, or any class that even mentioned these young adults. However, when I was working on my bachelors at SDSD, I only heard about a small group of students contributing at the A.S. In reality there was no official support for them. Sadly, we are all finally getting familiar with these terms, now students are aware of the opportunities offered. What I do know is that El Centro does provide a little office for the LGBT community, which I’m trying to get more involved in. Due to the amount of hate, lack of support that these people face I think there should be more informational events that embrace/praise the community.

Bibi
I went to high school 9-12th grade at CHS during the years of 2009-2012. During this time I had already met the love of my life, AKA my fiancee. Although it doesn't seem like it (to me), it hasn't been very long since then, yet, there has been so much progress in our community. When I was in high school it was super taboo to even talk about gay people. It was the biggest gossip if people found out someone was gay. Now that i look back, I regret with all of my heart, having gone to prom with a guy when i could have gone with my boo. It makes us laugh now, but back then it would hurt me so intensely because I was in the closet for the entirety of my high school career. I actually didn't come out till i graduated SDSU in 2016 out of fear of not being accepted. So with that being said, i feel like i could have definitely been supported more by the school, friends, and especially family. I have come a long way though. My family accepts my partner, they love her almost as much as i do. And as for the public, i can care less what they think. I dont push my sexuality onto others, its not in my personality to be that way, but i support anyone who choses to do so. If it serves your mental health, then all power to you. I just hope that more teenagers can live happier youths and not supper the way I did. I wish that the LGBTQ+ programs can be more accepted and expanded in schools but i know that parents and guardians are not always for it. Its a sad reality but i guess like in my case, only time will heal the animosity of LGBTQ+ debates.

The Lavender Graduation celebrates students that graduate from their program and who are also part of the LGBTQ+ community. I am not sure if this event has any of the supports mentioned, but it does bring awareness to our community at SDSU. The Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center is located in El Centro and their mission is to create a safe space and empower the LGBT community by providing essential resources. They offer individual and family counseling,Transgender support, Addiction Recovery, Mental Illness Support,Anger Management, and Domestic Violence. They have different meetings every Thursday from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
