For this assignment, you will write a thoughtful one-paragraph response to the article, written by Professor of History, Joshua D. Rothman. Consider the following questions when responding:

~ What is your position on the constant rhetoric of "This is not America," "This is not who we are," etc, considering what Rothman has shared?
~ What do you think the events that Rothman mention actually say about the history of our country? How can we move past denial and discuss the real life, ongoing implications?
~ What words stand out to you? How are they used? What do they mean?
~ Think back to the Cori Bush Article. How did Rothman's article support what she had mentioned in her article?

Remember to write your name after your response (--Ms. Barrera)

After reading "This is not America," I believe that the tragic event that happened at the United States Capitol was intolerable and inappropriate. The events Joshua D. Rothman discussed in the article showed how there have been many violent anti-black events throughout America’s history. Furthermore, we can move on and discuss the problems that are occurring presently by being aware of what is going on and informing as many people as possible. In addition, a word that stood out to me was “insurrection” because it is used to describe the incident that occurred at the capitol and this word means a violent uprising against authority or government. I believe Rothman’s article supported what Cori Bush had mentioned in her article because they both talked about how unfairly they treated African Americans and how they are more lenient towards white people.

When people say "this is not america" I feel they mean this is not the america they know because they chose to ignore america's past but now they can't just ignore this because this is in their face. This is the america that sadly many people live in. Cori Bush talks about it in her article how she was really scared for her life on Jan. 6th but some people in congress were not and were high fiving the rioters in solidarity while they were parading the confederate flag up and down the capital . In the article Rothman talks about america's history and how things like this have been going on for ages so to say "this is not america" is just being ignorant. We can grow by educating ourselves on the full history of this country and staying up to date about the world today.

After reading the document ´This is not America´ it opened a whole new perspective on how i see people. The people who call themself true Americans stormed are capital and disrespected and put our country to shame. I personally think that everything bad from the past is still happening in a new era. The article states ´ the police were walking and high-fiving the rioters. If that was a BLM protest I could already picture the news saying ´25 African Americans shout outside the capital and many more injured´. The document just shows the reality in the world and shows how people can be hypercritical, fake and that's just the truth. This event has disturbed many people and many say it was not necessary for them to enter the capital. There is always a solution to the problem but problems are solved one step at a time and I believe this country can rise to the top once again. (Alberto De Haro )

After reading the article and what happened at the capitol was just embarrassing for our country. What the rioters did was just wrong in so many ways. " This is not America" showed how people can really act in this world. It makes everything worse is that BLM protest was a peaceful protest that sent a message that meant something to this world. The protest/riot that happened on Jan 6th 2021 was a disgrace to our country, if they were true Americans like they said that they wouldn't have attacked the capital like they did. If the BLM protest did the same thing as the people who who broke in the capital it would of have been a blood bath and that is just scary to think about in our world. - Jayden.V

After reading the article there were many statements claiming that we had happened on January 6th was not something America would do. I agree with the writer when he talks about how it is familiar in our country's history. But there were many people that disagreed and those people are a product of the uniformity of education system. The truth of white supremacist have done with and are still doing should be seen and not ignored like how schools and movies have been avoiding the Ugly Truth Rothman talked about how white mobs would torment African Americans.
