Henry's Red Badge of Courage

Henry’s red badge of courage was not given to him because he came in contact with a bullet, but because he questioned himself and his mental stability, therefore, an enemy did not give Henry his red badge of courage. Currently, Henry is fighting a war within his own mind, his senses are turning against one another, "In his efforts against the numbing pain he was like a man wrestling with a creature of the air" (68). His initial mindset going into war was much like the soldier who struck him. The soldier wanted nothing but to get his job done and serve his country proudly. This was the reason Henry initially enlisted, but after being engulfed in the war for so long, his sense of pride has become fearful of his sense of security.

The man who hit Henry in the head with the gun is much how Henry was during the first stage of fighting. Unresponsive and a machine, mechanically fighting and killing. The man is”livid and his eyes were rolling uncontrollably” (67). The infantry, much like Henry, were fleeing the atrocities they were being faced with. As Henry was fleeing the first time he had many questions rattling in his head, and now observing the infantry running away he has even more questions, “but no one made answers” (67). Henry is himself in that he is the boy observing everyone else fleeing, questioning and wondering why they are doing so. And he is also the fleeing soldier who knocks him in the head in that he does not wish to be deterred from his task; “He fought an intense battle with his body. His dulled senses wished him to swoon and he opposed them stubbornly, his mind portraying unknown dangers and mutilations if he should fall upon the field.“(68). The fleeing soldier, much as henry was, was overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of war and couldn't handle it any other way than by running from it.
