When i'm searching for a book to read I tend to steer clear of fantasy or sci-fi, so the genre did interest me. I also decided to read this book because it involves the Bengali culture, which I haven't read about a lot. I ended up really enjoying the novel and found my self feeling and relating with all the girls in different ways. My favorite part of the book was definitely when we traveled farther in time and started reading about Chantal and Anna. At first I was a little confused on who they were, but it was really fun connecting the dots as they talk about their parents, whom we just had read about when they were their age. I related to a lot of the girls during the book, but specifically Chantal. Chantal is a dancer and so am I, so I related to her on that level, but I really felt for her when she didn't get the main dance role. I know the exact feeling of not being good enough when it comes to getting picked for roles or certain classes in dance. Even if the reason she wasn't picked is different from mine, I can still relate to it. One part of the of the book I didn't like was not getting to see a little bit of Rajeev's (Baba's) perspective. I know the book was based around the Das women, but getting to see his view on having to be the reason they moved around a lot and his thoughts on Ranee and the girls during the times leading up to his death would have been very interesting. Since India is very culturally diverse, I was curious how regional differences might show in their lifestyle. I also saw that the book received a lot of praise, which sparked my interest to read it. I really liked the book because there were a lot of things I could relate to.  My favorite part was when the book talked about Chantal and Anna’s experiences growing up and how it was similar to their parents' upbringing. It was also really interesting how their Bengali culture and traditions stayed with them for generations. I feel like I most relate to Sonia because she is very driven and goal-oriented like me. One thing I did not like about the book was that we got very little information about Tara and Sonias’ husbands. The stories of them meeting their husbands were explained, but there was very little information about them afterward during the parts of Chantal and Anna growing up. I would have liked to see how Anna and Chantels’ fathers influenced their upbringing, but overall I really liked the book.

I am Indian, and the book has many many aspects that are Indian as well. Many books don't and that is one of the reasons I liked and felt connected to this book. I enjoyed the book! I don't think I have a specific favorite part of the book, although I really like when, in each of the character's stories, they find themselves and who they are or want to be. Also, I really like when Anna decorates the locker room and breaks some of the school rules, but the gym teacher lets it stay. I think it really shows how she grows in her environment and how she incorporates herself into her work and everything she does. I related mostly to Anna because she did debate, like me, and strived for success and to be at the top of her class. Also, she tried to be her best self. I didn't like how we didn't get to read a lot about Chantal and Anna's adult lives, although we got a few details.
