When she was ultimately caught, her execution was meant to represent what would happen if the people continued to resist Spanish control. But she made sure to send her own message. She did not waste her last words, telling her people how different it would be if they knew the price of freedom and that it was not too late because although she was a young woman, she had enough courage to suffer through this and a thousand more deaths. After her death she inspired many to continue to fight for their independence. Her face graces the 10,000 Colombian pesos note and she continues to be a symbol of patriotism.
