a wave is a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to the other. a medium is a substance or material that carries the wave. The wave medium is not the wave and it doesn't make the wave. it carries or transports the wave from its source to other locations. a medium can be considered interacting particles. The interactions of one particle of the medium with the next adjacent particle allow the disturbance to travel through the medium.

While waves that travel within the depths of the ocean are longitudinal waves, the waves that travel along the surface of the oceans are referred to as surface waves. A surface wave is a wave in which particles of the medium undergo a circular motion.
