Protect ourselves and others from a bully

So now you know that bullying is a big problem that affects a lot of kids, but what do you do if someone is bullying you? Our advice falls into two categories: preventing a run-in with the bully, and what to do if you end up face-to-face with the bully.

Preventing a Run-In With a Bully

Don't give the bully a chance. As much as you can, avoid the bully. You can't go into hiding or skip class, of course. But if you can take a different route and avoid him or her, do so.

Stand tall and be brave. When you're scared of another person, you're probably not feeling your bravest. But sometimes just acting brave is enough to stop a bully. How does a brave person look and act? Stand tall and you'll send the message: "Don't mess with me." It's easier to feel brave when you feel good about yourself. See the next tip!
Get a buddy (and be a buddy). Two is better than one if you're trying to avoid being bullied. Make a plan to walk with a friend or two on the way to school or recess or lunch or wherever you think you might meet the bully. Offer to do the same if a friend is having bully trouble. Get involved if you see bullying going on in your school — tell an adult, stick up for the kid being bullied, and tell the bully to stop.

If The Bully Says or Does Something to You.

Ignore the bully. If you can, try your best to ignore the bully's threats. Pretend you don't hear them and walk away quickly to a place of safety. Bullies want a big reaction to their teasing and meanness. Acting as if you don't notice and don't care is like giving no reaction at all, and this just might stop a bully's behavior.

Stand up for yourself. Be really brave and confident. Tell the bully "No! Stop it!" in a loud voice. Then walk away, or run if you have to. Kids also can stand up for each other by telling a bully to stop teasing or scaring someone else, and then walk away together. If a bully wants you to do something that you don't want to do — say "no!" and walk away. If you do what a bully says to do, they will likely keep bullying you. Bullies tend to bully kids who don't stick up for themselves.

Don't bully back. Don't hit, kick, or push back to deal with someone bullying you or your friends. Fighting back just satisfies a bully and it's dangerous, too, because someone could get hurt. You're also likely to get in trouble. It's best to stay with others, stay safe, and get help from an adult.

Don't show your feelings. How can you stop yourself from getting angry or showing you're upset? Try distracting yourself (counting backwards from 100, spelling the word 'turtle' backwards, etc.) to keep your mind occupied until you are out of the situation and somewhere safe where you can show your feelings.

Tell an adult. If you are being bullied, it's very important to tell an adult. Find someone you trust and go and tell them what is happening to you. Teachers, principals, parents, and lunchroom helpers at school can all help to stop bullying. Sometimes bullies stop as soon as a teacher finds out because they're afraid that they will be punished by parents. This is not tattling on someone who has done something small — bullying is wrong and it helps if everyone who gets bullied or sees someone being bullied speaks up. Marijana.

Bullying abuses our Human Rights:

Jessica Mazza

Bullying is definitely something that I feel abuses our Human Rights. If anyone is bullying you, there is always help. We need to help our world in ending it. Bullying is an unwanted, aggressive behavior among school age groups. Everyone gets bullied no matter your race, religion, culture, gender, etc. We as a society need to realize that this affects our Human Rights.

As humans we have these rights to protect ourselves. Our Human Rights need to be respected by each other. Respect is something we need in schools. Bullying needs to be eliminated in schools. I feel if we treat it as a human right to stop bullying, maybe it will end or start to at least. Bullying impacts our physical and emotional state of being a human. We as a society and a human have the power to end bullying. As humans we have the right to be free from mental, emotional and physical violence. No matter if it is social, verbal or physical bullying we need to end it. We as individuals have the power to stop this. If we see something, we need to speak up!

The website I was looking at while researching, stated this quotation and I feel it is very important, "Just as we are all born with human rights we also have responsibilities to respect and protect the rights of others. This means that it is important to always be respectful of other people. We all have a responsibility to avoid all forms of bullying..." We need to realize that as humans it is our right to have these rights and protect them for ourselves and others. Bullying starts and ends with us. We need to realize that bullying is horrible. We need to remember the golden rule, "Treat others the way you want to be treated!"

Website: https://www.humanrights.gov.au/bullying-know-your-rights-violence-harassment-and-bullying-fact-sheet

Violence harms human rights in different ways. One way is privacy. privacy that violence may break so that someone comes into your room when you're doing something and you start a brawl. so the person does not obstruct your privacy. Another way is to persuade someone of something to something terrible so you can easy lose a loved one. If you join a football team or something, they tell you to do something terrible, because they have such a tradition, so you can easily hurt someone. All that harms to human selfconfidence.
Stop Bullying Now!

By: Jada Atchison

In order to stop bullying, it's essential to understand what it is. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive, behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. This can be done in various ways and includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, or excluding someone from a group on purpose. This can occur curing or after school hours, so it is essential to speak up when you see that someone isn't being treated correctly.

One of the more common forms of bullying these days is cyber bullying. This occurs over the internet, and includes mean text messages, rumors posted on social networks, posting embarrassing or unwanted photos, and making fake profiles. Even though this is not one hundred percent preventable, there are ways to avoid this from happening to you or your peers. Creating internet rules with your parents is essential. Following your school's rules will also keep you out of trouble. If you are educated about what bullying is, there is less of a chance that you will take part those types of actions.

Unfortunately, there are some groups that are more at risk than others. Members of the LGBTQ community, children with disabilities, and children of color often get picked on because they are the minorities in many situations; when people are "different" others choose to treat them with less respect. There are many warnings that you should pay attention to such as unexplainable injuries, declining of grades, and changes in eating habits. One of the main effects of bullying is depression, and this can have a lasting impact on people. Having a respect and understanding for diversity will decrease these issues from occuring.

http://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/definition/index.html

How can we prevent this? How do we get help?

By: Jada Atchison

Parents, school staff, and other caring adults can help kids prevent it by talking about it, building a safe work environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy. You can address bullying by reminding students that they love, and model to other the way they would like to be treated. In schools, it's important for everyone in that community to understand what factors are at risk when someone is being disrespected. Changing the attitudes of others into positive ones can help decrease the chances of someone running into a bully.

In order to stop these actions from happening, it needs to be stopped on the spot. The longer you wait to speak up, there will be less evidence that it is occurring. By being a bystander, you are allowing the bully to get away with their terrible actions. In order to help those in need, it essential to tell a principal, teacher, counselor, or superintendent. Call 911 if you know that someone is at risk of harm. If you notice that someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK.

Observers of bullying are often fearful, powerless to act, guilty for not acting, or tempted to participate. It is important not to fall into any of these categories, because you can be the most important person in someone's life and no even realize it. Be someone who you would want to be if you were put in these types of situations.

http://www.violencepreventionworks.org/public/bullying_effects.page
