One of the most distinctive characteristics of her work if her style in which she represents herself. She does not conform to the social standards set for women in the early 1900s. She also used a lot of human anatomy in her work; and blood. Though graphic art was not uncommon in paintings, it was the way she used anatomy or blood or describe her pain from her accidents or to represent a unity in her family.

Kahlo was very transparent with her physical and mental suffering. Although many painters are often portrayed as “suffering”, but Kahlo’s work seems very in your face about how she is feeling rather being interpretive. Her “selfies” are also very distinctive, she even said “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.”

She received many commissions for her work. In 1941, she received a commission from the Mexican government, but she wasn’t ever able to finish it. In 1953, she finally received her first solo exhibition in Mexico.
