Frida Kahlo, in my opinion, is one of the most iconic painters in Mexico. She endured a lot of heartbreak, but she still lived a full life. Even today, she seems like one of the most influential women. Even through her disabilities and accidents she overcame those and used them to inspire her work. Frida’s talent drove her to be the first national artist to present her work the Louvre Museum. Frida has had an undeniable impression on art everywhere, she is even the creator of the “selfie”. Kahlo is considered to be one of the best artist around the world, even after her death, she left her mark.

What kind of work does Frida do?

Frida Kahlo was a painter, many of her works were self-portraits. One of the most distinctive characteristics of her work if her style in which she represents herself. She does not conform to the social standards set for women in the early 1900s. She also used a lot of human anatomy in her work; and blood. Though graphic art was not uncommon in paintings, it was the way she used anatomy or blood or describe her pain from her accidents or to represent a unity in her family.

Frida was born in 1907 and endured a hard life from the very beginning. She got polio at the age of six and developed a limp because of the illness. Later, in 1922, she was in a tragic accident that left her spine and pelvis fractured. During her recovery, she began to paint, and she became the artist we know today. She was married to renowned muralist Diego Rivera, but it is said that she had many affairs with both men and women. Today, she is a large LGBQT+ icon. Unfortunately, due to her injuries she passed away on July 13, 1954. To this day, Frida’s legacy is stronger than ever, she is remembered as a survivor who fought until the end. In 1958, the home where Kahlo grew up opened. Later it was known as the Casa Azul and houses many artifacts from her life. In 2002, the movie Frida, starring Salma Hayek debuted. It was nominated for six Academy awards.

What is transformative about Frida Kahlo’s work is her transparency with her medical conditions and how she choses to step out of the social norms for Mexican women at that time. Kahlo was very transparent with her physical and mental suffering. Although many painters are often portrayed as “suffering”, but Kahlo’s work seems very in your face about how she is feeling rather being interpretive. Her “selfies” are also very distinctive, she even said “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.”
