Transparency & standing up for our profession.

I have found that being as up front as possible- I have these posters up in the entrances of my library, because it allows me to have conversations about student rights, etc.

I have very little direction from any leadership. Our lead librarian has retired and not been replaced. We have a new superintendent and now it is trickling down into district support staff. I need guidance with our 1-to-1 initiative. I have 3,700 devices checked out directly to students and staff. How do I allow for testing up until the end of the year and assess for damages, collect fines, and check in devices? I have been asking this question since September, and there is no direction. I need a plan! This has been my biggest stressor since the beginning of the year. Please help!

I'm concerned because I have library aides...how do you guys handle when a book accidentally gets checked out to the wrong student, or at the end of the year when you are doing inventory and there were books that weren't checked out but aren't on the shelves? I want to make sure I'm getting as many books back as possible for my kids to continue to enjoy.

As a first year librarian, I'm looking for authentic, meaningful and interactive lessons for my kids. We've made goodreads account, looked at LearningAlly together, done a Book Tasting themed to Starbooks (Starbucks) and had some lessons about choosing a book that is right for you, as well as digital citizenship. 💡Idea💡

I have TAFE students (Texas Assoc. of Future Educators) who come into the library to help with different tasks: poster making, lamination, bulletin boards, signage, creating and sharing school activity promotions. We have created a Google form for staff to ask these students to help with tasks. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they learn teachers skills that will not be taught by a teacher or professor: copying, cutting, die cutting, laminating and working efficiently. It's a win-win situation!

Jean- Speaking about advocacy, our board just passed some extremely restrictive policies that are affecting students' access to book and create a ton of additional work on us, librarians. How do I fight for what is right while still being a respectful and professional employee?

As a middle school librarian, I am also a computer tech liaison. It has tended to take up most of my job. I house and distribute loaner Chromebook and submit tickets for broken devices. I have trouble keeping a happy face with students who have intentionally damaged or broken Chromebooks gaming. Any suggestions on how to make these tasks easier for my one person show?

For my students who don't already love to read but I want to keep engaged, I turn on podcasts like "greeking out" or fun history themed ones so that they're often still kept interested while they are in the library. Do you have favorite, interesting podcasts that would be on point for middle school students? (I love the QR code idea that was mentioned earlier for podcasts that you put up around the library)

IDEA

Use voice recording buttons to speak out your directions to makerspaces, check in/out procedures, etc. When kids need help, they can push the button to hear the directions again. It has been a life changer this year.

Make sure it's followed.
Get the kids awake/aware about what's happening to their rights.
Create a grassroots organization for students/by students (especially upper grade levels).

Seek out/call your state library organization for tips on a book challenge or suppression.
Have community members [i.e. mayor] declare your city a book sanctuary, i.e. free of book bans.
