The government (strongly rooted around the church) believed that vanquishing the devils touch would free their city from sin which was far from the truth.

Rationalism is defined as "a belief or theory that opinions and actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or emotional response." This thought process was very prominent during the age of reason, in which people began to stray from the church. Rationalism views knowledge as the main source for thoughts and ideas, rather than previous beliefs that God and the Bible were the main source for thoughts and ideas.
Similarly, enlightenment believed in reason and knowledge. However, enlightenment placed these over tradition rather than religion. Some enlightenment philosophers such as Voltaire believed that the church should be separate from the government, an idea that later came to fruition. The enlightenment did not condemn the church as rationalism did, but rather gave it a new identity within society.
