As the moon was facing them, the father was not able to see anything, and Ignacio said he felt bad and wanted to sleep. The father mentions how he's not going to leave him for the possibility of someone killing him. This shows that Ignacio has done something that was so bad that it could get him killed.

“I tell you, I can’t see very well… I'll find somebody to take care of you, and I'm not going to leave you lying here now for somebody to finish off... Sleep up there.” (Rulfo, 38-39)

The father tells Ignacio about how he’s only doing this for his wife and how he has disappointed him, how he doesn’t want to see him again, and how he doesn’t consider him his son due to what he has done. This now shows that there is a conflict between the two of them and we now know why the father isn't willing to leave Ignacio alone.

“I’m doing it for your dead mother. From the first you’ve caused me nothing but trouble, humiliation, and shame… as far as I’m concerned, you aren’t my son anymore... when i heard you'd taken to the roads, robbing and killing people.” (Rulfo, 39)

Ignacio asks if there is water, and the father says that even if there was, he wouldn’t let him drink it, before he started talking about his wife, how she died, and how he would have killed her. This shows how the father is not willing to do that much for Ignacio, and how it seems that he can't forgive him for what he's done.

“Even if there was water, I wouldn’t let you down to drink… The other child she tried to give birth to killed her. And you would've killed her again if she'd lived till now.” (Rulfo, 40)

The father starts asking Ignacio how he feels about his mother and himself, before they see the town. When Ignacio lets go of his father, they finally hear the dogs barking. This ends the story.

“The memory of your mother makes you cry, doesn’t it?... Somehow your body got filled with evil instead of affection… And you didn’t hear them? You didn’t even help me listen.” (Rulfo, 40)
