John Brown was an abolitionist originally from Connecticut. He was firm in his beliefs that the best way to end slavery was violence. He spent much of his life in a variety of lines of work, as well as using violence to try to end slavery, even slaughtering pro-slavery men in front of their families in one case.
In 1857, he began to form an army, which eventually grew to 22 men and included 5 black men and 3 of Brown's sons. They planned for a raid on the Harper's Ferry Arsenal. By 1859, their plan was solidified and they were ready for their raid. During the night of October 16, 1859, they marched down to Harper's Ferry, managing to seize it. Brown had expected the local slaves to rise up and fight with them, but was faced instead with both local citizens and militia fighting him. Brown's army was captured by the troops by morning. Ten of Brown's men were killed in the raid, including two of his sons.
Brown was sentenced to be hung on December 2nd after a quick trial. He wrote the day of his death "The crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood”, which many consider a prediction for the civil war. Though his raid was short in time, it had a lasting impact and was very controversial.

Southerners were very upset by John Brown's raid. They viewed as John Brown as a terrible person who threatened their lives and their property. Furthermore, they considered his actions treason, for his attempted destruction of government property. Lastly, they couldn't possibly understand why anyone would view John Brown as a hero, causing more tension to arise between the North and South.

Northerners viewed John Brown as someone making big steps towards ending slavery. They even considered him a martyr. Furthermore, John Brown inspired many in the North to work harder to further the progress against slavery. Most of all, while they believed he was a madman, they admired his courage and passion.

Overall, the South and North had differing opinions about John Brown's Raid. The North considered him a martyr willing to die for his cause, while the South considered him crazy and a criminal. The South were enraged by Brown's actions, while the North were inspired. However, this event made both sides aware of the fact that the argument over slavery likely wouldn't be solved without war.
