Whitney Young grew up in a segregated Kentucky. He was raised in a middle class family, his mother and father were educated individuals. He was raised around prominent black professionals, who helped shape who he became. He also had access and economic resources to attend prestigious segregated high school and college.
Whitney Young served in the army in WW2, at this time he had been pursuing a medical degree and decided he would change his major to social work. His decision was based on the mediation he lead between African American soldiers and white soldiers. He quickly realized this was his passion. Whitney always excelled in school and attended Kentucky State, which was segregated at the time.
