When I was in elementary school, the kind of education I experienced were “lessons straight out of the textbook”. What I mean by this is that my teachers would always read and do whatever the textbook told them to do. They believed they were doing their job by just giving us the information instead of planning a creative lesson for us to enjoy and learn at the same time. There were times when we could work in groups but that was only because there would be people from the board coming in to see if we were using the “think, pair, share” or the “quiz, quiz, trade” classroom activities. When I got into high school, I still experienced “lessons straight out of the textbook”.

The kind of education I deserve is the one where teachers as well as students are allowed to think out the box. Many of my teachers from the past were so strict in abiding by the rules of working straight from the book that they did not stop and ask if we were comprehending the material instead of them just “feeding” it to us. When solving a problem, there are infinite ways in which you can find the solution. In this case, I wished my teachers would have found different accommodations in which it made us students easier and fun for us to learn. I deserved to have grown up working with different people in different groups because in reality, we need people in order to succeed. I realized coming into college that we depend on ourselves and others in order to achieve greatness.

To solve the problem we face in our society, students like me need an education where teachers help us comprehend a lesson instead of just handing us the information for us to remember. Everything that we are being taught has significance but it is the teacher’s responsibility to tell us why. Students as well as me, need an education where we can collaborate with each other because as much as we are learning from the teacher we are also learning from each other.

I Matter

The education that I experienced was mostly absent. The teachers were few and far in-between that cared about us students. It is honestly embarrassing to say I grew up in the United States and we couldn’t drink the water in my school. That our school was not able to have heat in the winter, how are you supposed to learn when you are so cold you bone feel it? I knew early on that if I wanted to really learn and be better I was better doing it on my own at the public library in the suburbs than I would be in my classroom in Detroit where the textbook was from before the Berlin Wall came down.

The kind of education I deserve is the same type of education everywhere deserves but we do not receive it. In America, public education should be as good if not better than the education the billionaire class has with their privately funded education. How is it that in America educational resources are so limited to the ones that need them? We have kids with publicly funded ipads in one city and twenty minutes away there are kids who cannot even drink out of a water fountain, or there is mold in the ceiling tiles because the roof is going to cave in.

To face the problems we face in our society, students like me need an education that will prepare us to help fight for our communities. We need to learn how to work together to achieve goals, and how to not be silent. We need our educators to be present with us and give us 100%. When I was younger, I remember always feeling defeated with education because it seemed like no one cared. Teachers didn’t care, voters didn’t care, people often forget how something feels if it is not their journey to walk. I think of how much more effort I would have put in if I felt like it mattered.

The kind of education I experienced was mostly good. I had great opportunities and caring teachers, but because I didn’t get much support from my parents I ended up getting married and put my education goals on “hold”.

The kind of education I deserve is one that challenges my skills without hurting my self-esteem. I deserve education that help me improve my life and help me to become independent and feel good about myself.

To solve the problems we face in our society, students like me need an education that won’t make us waste time with a lot of requirements and put us to work or in “action” as soon as possible, so we are productive as soon as possible. For me, this is a second chance to finish school and get a degree, but it is getting expensive. A counselor made a mistake in the class curriculum, so I took 3 classes that I didn’t need. Even though I enjoyed the classes and learned a lot, as a result of this misstep, it's taken me more time and money to finish school. Sometimes I think If doing this it will be worth it because the system is making me invest more of my time and resources than the ones I had planned. A “Second Chance program” will be great, a program that guides students like me take the right steps.

Reaching My Goals

The kind of education I experienced was mostly positive. Since I was home-schooled and in a program that was classically based and emphasized conversation with very small classes, my education didn’t fit the traditional system. However, my schooling was mostly independent (I did all my homework, reading, etc. by myself with little guidance) and I feel like I was lost with a lot of ideas but not much help in directing them to further knowledge. Also, my curriculum was very Christian and mostly taught from a very specific point of view, narrowing my thinking sometimes until I did my own research.

The kind of education I deserve is one that helps me figure out my goals and who I want to be. One that helps me understand and decide what I can best contribute in the world and that helps me see the vastness of the world and show how to continually adapt to find ways and places that I can work and learn and use my skills and knowledge.

To solve the problems we face in society, students like me need an education that treats everyone like they have something to offer. Even if they aren’t always good at “playing the game” or looked down upon or don’t fit the mold of what a traditionally good student looks like. If everyone is empowered and assured that they have something to offer then the whole world is open to so many more ideas and ways of thinking as people feel encouraged to bring themselves forward.

The kind of education I experienced was mostly an encouraging one. My parents always encouraged me to do my best without it feeling like they were being hard on me. I'm thankful for having teachers in the past who treated each student equally and helped everyone out. There have been times where I felt like learning a new topic was hard but, my teachers have helped me learn that topic and made sure I understood what they were talking about. I've appreciated every teacher I ever had because all of them have taught me at least one important life lesson.

The kind of education I deserve is one that will help me not only expand my knowledge but, to grow as a person. I believe with the knowledge that you gain, you can go out and make an impact in someone else's life. Education is important to me because I feel like it's helped me become the person I am today. Whenever I get interested in a topic, I will want to learn anything and everything I can learn. This has helped me realize that learning can actually be interesting and it doesn't have to be boring. I feel like when people find a topic that they're really interested in, that they'll love to learn more about it.

To solve the problems we face in our society, students like me need an education that will continue to encourage others to keep going. Some people may need a reminder that even though things may be hard and graduation seems so far away, they got this. I feel like a lot of students like to procrastinate and get discouraged. I feel like if students try to get a tutor or ask their peers for help, they would feel less discouraged and not wait as long to procrastinate.
