On Wednesday, the day of lectures at university came, and then an evening course in newly invented language which they called Latin as a Foreign Language at McPhillips-Poe, as well as time-travelling, beginning at six, thus the young man did not have a chance to feast and would eat afterwards.

Besides the golden tokens, he had kept this second job because the young wizard could practice his magic. There was to Dyer something fiercely elemental, almost existential, about teaching both his dark sorcery and alchemy - Like building shaping in Babylon and human dissolve in Pompei. Also it was necessary for his students to learn all aspects of the ancient sorcery. It was the first time in his life that he had done something pedagogically useful, since the last century. What difference did it make that the job was beneath him, a recent Ph.D., while most of colleagues in the moon-night school at McPhillips-Poe were old, notable Warlocks? It didn't matter, even, that his job was a perversion of all the sentiments he held as a progressive, relatively young teacher, due to his couple-of-centuries-old age. He was a God two evenings a week, some of the students thought. But they were all blind, as his actual powers could destroy the God himself.

He would eat afterwards.

Besides the money, he had kept this second job because it flattered him. There was to Dyer something fiercely elemental, almost existential, about teaching both his language and his literature in a foreign country - Like Joyce in Trieste, Isherwood and Nabokov in Berlin, Beckett in Paris. Also it was necessary for his students. It was the first time in his life that he had done something socially useful. What difference did it make that the job was beneath him, a recent Ph.D., while most of colleagues in the evening school at McGill were idle housewives and bachelor civil servant ? It didn't matter, even, that his job was a perversion of all the sentiments he held as a progressive young teacher. He was a god two evenings a week, sometimes suffering and fatigued, but nevertheless an omniscient, benevolent god.

1. The use of everyday language: "Wednesday", "dinner tonight"... the use of the contractions such as "it didn't matter"
2. Themes are real life everyday issue such as "didn't have time for dinner", "having a normal job", the protagonist also struggles with his worth and he is confused in term with his career.
3. The reader can relate to the characters mind set: such as the responsibility that the protagonist has towards his students. The protagonist also deals with the fact that he is aware of his social status and wants to uphold it e.g., "He had kept his second job because it flattered him"
4. Mould Setting:His profession shapes/moulds the setting because he is stressed out because of his current position, such as at university.
5. What difference did it make that the job was beneath him, a recent Ph.D., while most of colleagues in the evening school at McGill were idle housewives and bachelor civil servant ? - internal dialogue- the character thinks to himself
6. The character comapres himself to God-he questions his "being"

Analysis of the extract from the historical fiction

Psychoanalytic approach:

The text extract gives a clear understanding of how the character feels in the moment: “He sat with his head slightly averted, a posture that could easily have been taken for arrogance, though Rivers was more inclined to suspect shyness. The voice was slightly slurred, the flow of words sometimes hesitant, sometimes rushed. A disguised stammer, perhaps, but a life-long stammer, Rivers thought, not the recent, self-conscious stammer of the neurasthenic.”. This example suggests that the character dr. Rivers is sitting with, is feeling shy and might be affected by the hardships during the first world war. This can be seen through the way the character is described as having a disguised stammer and the way his words are rushed. The way the character is trying to look put together by sitting with a posture that could be misunderstood as arrogance, is an unconscious act to protect himself from others, also known as the id.

Furthermore, there is guilt and shame put on Sassoon by superego: "In case the lunatic went missing?". This shows how he feels like a burden, but they are also concerned about him. However, the way he refers to himself as a lunatic could suggest that he feels overwhelmed and ashamed about how the war has affected him.

Anna, Cecilie and Sophie

Romance text for Historical fiction:

As soon as Rivers set eyes on the man sitting across from him, he could not help but be drawn to him. Rivers' pulse skipped a beat as he spoke in a smooth, slurred rhythm. Rivers couldn't help but question whether his demeanour was more indicative of shyness than of arrogance because he seemed remote and had his head turned aside a little. The man's stuttering led Rivers to believe that he had a hard time with it as well as it being a part of him, but it only served to enhance his charm.

Rivers was aware that pursuing this intriguing individual would require him to learn more about him, but he could not help but feel a sense of curiosity and a need to know more about him.

It was discovered that the individual had served in the war and went by the name of Sassoon. With a heavy sigh, Rivers slightly scooted closer to Sassoon, feeling the sleeves of his shirt brush against each other, wondering if Sassoon possibly felt the same. The more he spoke, the more he felt intrigued by him.
