         <description><![CDATA[<div>I isolated my samples from 1) my armpit and 2) the freezer wall. As expected, the armpit sample is way more interesting (and way more disgusting) than the freezer sample, so that is why I included a photo from day 4 of the armpit sample. I think the most surprising thing was how big of a time difference there was in growth from the armpit vs freezer. I began seeing colonies on day 2 from the armpit sample, but not until day 3 from the freezer sample.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My experiment was on cross-contamination. I looked at the effects of how you clean a cutting board after using it for cutting raw poultry. This sample was collected after washing my cutting board with hot soapy water and letting it sit for 24 hours. An interesting thing I saw was how there was only one type of colony that was growing. I'm not sure what microbe(s) are present, but I would have thought there would be more than one type of colony that forms.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My lab compared different surfaces touched with varying frequencies by me and how that corresponds to matching microbes. I swabbed a plate straight out of the dishwasher, a houseplant I water every 2 days, my laptop keyboard, and my finger. I was really surprised by how few microbes grew on my fingertip sample, as I would expect from all the things that we touch in a day it would be pretty dirty. This could perhaps be due to hand washing removing many, but even on my laptop that I obviously don't wash daily, there wasn't much that grew. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For my experiment, I compared a frequently touched object (my phone) with fresh produce (an unwashed apple). Both had lots of microbial growth, but as expected they were very different. I expected to see a wider variety of species on my phone that is exposed to many different areas. Also, the apple may have a wider diversity because it has natural bacteria living on it.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My lab compared the tomato surfaces and inside.  I put my sample into four case. Two of them are tomato surfaces, and two of them are inside. the very interest thing is that four of them are different performance, and the case number 1 is first one which shows the color. here are the picture when I recorder them on the fourth day. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As part of my experiment, I tested the amount and type of microbes that are growing on the table in my kitchen and then the table outside on my patio. I hypothesizes that the table outside would have a significantly higher amount of microbes growing on it as well as a wider range of microbes growing on it as well. The end result was very intriguing to see because there were only 4 small concentrations of bacteria cells on the inside table plate and the picture included is the outside table. The outside table had a significant amount of growth on it as well as an abundance of different microbes growing on it (some circular/wet and other with a fuzz like texture with dark centers).   </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For my experiment, I isolated the microbes from my underwear/compression shorts and my nose. The weirdest part of the lab was that for the first two days, nothing was growing in my nose sample but plenty in my underwear sample, but by the end of the experiment, my nose sample seemed to have many more varieties of colonies of microbes. Also, it’s  interesting comparing to the control sample as there were only few dots in mine. Here is a picture of my petri dishes:<br> </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For my experiment, I decided to test the amount and type of microbes that were present on an outdoor plant and my toilet seat. I was most shocked at the growth rat differences between the samples I had taken. I had assumed the microbes taken from my toilet seat would grow quickest, but it was actually quite the opposite. The outdoor plant sample began growing within a day or two, and it wasn't until about day 3 or 4 the toilet seat sample began to grow.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I tested my dogs tongue and her dirty tennis ball right after a walk and then again 8 hours later, to see if one was dirtier than the other after 8 hours. I was interested to find that the ball had a white substance that Madison's mouth did not have, but after about 8 hours, that white substance was barely present on the ball.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The control for my experiment was my hands washed with hot soapy water for 30 seconds. I was very shocked by what all grew on my plate despite me washing my hands. I isolated microbes from my counter top for my second dish and then compared it to my third dish where I isolated the microbes from my hand after touching the dirty surface. I was specifically looking into the transfer of microbes after touching a surface for a short period of time.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I thought it would be interesting to see the difference in dishes stored in different places. I sampled dishes that have just finished washing in the dishwasher; dishes in my cabient; dishes that have been soaking in the sink for a while with a quick rinse(my family members think the dishes are safe to use after rinse, and I am so annoyed when they do that); and the cup Iwas drinking the night before. The dishes after a rinse had more colonies than the rest easily. </div>]]></description>

I was surprised at the fullness of the ear plate, and also at the lack of variety in the phone plate. Which brings the question, if anybody knows, is there something about the phone signal that could kill or limit microbial growth? </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The two on the top are the front and back of the same agar plate that was treated by the surface of the flower. I think both bacteria (with restricted colony) and fungi (with fluffy appearance) are presented on the plate. The bottom agar plate was treated with the surface of scratch paper. I randomly picked one of my scratch paper and utilized exactly the same strategy to isolate and apply the microbes. There were only around five colonies on the plates. I guess the potential reason is that I restricted the isolated area of the scratch paper to make it the same as the flower (which is pretty small), and there could have only a few microbes on that small area of the scratch paper.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My Petri dishes were covered in condensation for the first 3-4 days, and very few cultures were visible. I wonder if there was too much water in my sample and maybe the condensation dripped onto the agar and diluted the microbes? This sample is from a leaf of a spider plant. This dish has the most growth thus far. It seems to be limited bacterial growth. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I took samples from my toothbrush and my dog's nose. The swab for my dog didn't get covered as well so surprisingly the dog's nose had way less growth than the toothbrush. For the whole experiment until day 5 all of the petri dishes were covered in condensation because I started the experiment as soon as the agar had cooled from being poured. This is from the dog's nose sample on day 5. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I tested how applying a baking soda solution (1 tsp per 4 quarts water) would change the fungal/bacterial growth ratio of a soil sample and a tomato leaf sample. I saw fungal hyphae growth on the soil sample before and after adding the baking soda solution, the plates had too many colonies to count, with hyphae dominating the edges of the plates. The tomato leaf before baking soda showed the growth of fungus and bacteria while the tomato leaf sample after baking soda did not show any fungal growth. The first picture shows all the plates (bottom view) on Day 3. <br>Since the tomato leaf control had less colonies overall, they were easier to see. The next two pictures are from the top side tomato control plate on day 6 (bottom left) and day 9 (bottom right).<br><br>I wonder if the way that the colonies with the raised markings on the bottom spread shows that the microbe is motile? It looks like they form a little path away from the original CFU. <br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I pulled my microbes from the area behind my kitchen sink and from behind my bathroom sink. I was interested in finding out if the microbes would grow faster in a dark environment or in a sunny environment. My hypothesis was that the dark environment would help it grow faster because there is some algae near my bathroom sink, which is darker than my kitchen sink area. What surprised me is that the sample from behind my kitchen sink that was placed in sunlight grew the most! <br><br>The picture attached is of the sample I just mentioned. <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I took these two samples on my hand. The top one is from the hand before washing, and the below is one is from the hand after I clean with Purell.<br>The top Petri dish start growing the colony on the third day. I guess that it may because that the first and the second day are rainy days, which inhibit the growth of the bacteria.<br>The picture attached is the petri dished with the two samples I mention on day 5.One thing that makes feel me surprised is that the Petri dish with the sample from my washed hands does not grow anything, during the 5-day experiment. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Below is day five of the experiment. I took swabs of the under side of my toilet seat, and what I found to be the most surprising about it was the fact that it didn't grow into as many colonies as I had initially thought. I've always been really disgusted by the toilet, thus expecting more colonies to grow when compared to another petri dish I had which was of a swab of my hand and a swab of the toilet seat. Out of all the petri dishes that I had, I would have thought that the sample collected from the under side of the toilet seat would grow the most. However, it ended having the least amount of colonies. <br><br></div>]]></description>

It had been growing in a window that receives sunlight all day like its natural environment.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Below is a sample from my microwave door handle that I took on the last day of my experiment. I was surprised to see the overall microbial activity of the sample, and it provides a very important reminder of how we all need to be proactive in washing our hands and keeping the different surfaces in our homes clean in order to prevent dangerous microbes from potentially entering our body. As you can see, there are thick layers along the center of the dish, clusters of small spores along the outside as well as thin layers, and a couple of small spores near the center. This sample contained far more activity from my living sample, which was a swab of my saliva.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Below is a sample taken from my kitchen countertop after 2 weeks of not being cleaned. This experiment has put a lot of sense into me and will be cleaning the kitchen countertop after every time I cook from now on!<br><br>A multitude of bacterial growth and mold would not be a good addition to my meals!<br><br>However it looks like the microbial growth present on my plate does not quite match-up to some/most of the others' here. I'm now wondering if the room temp(70 degrees) was too cold to allow an explosive growth rate.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I took a sample from my dog's mouth and a space under a wooden cabinet crawling with bugs and lizards. I then placed a binder over all 3 dishes to prevent light from getting in. I found it interesting how the greatest amount of microbe activity happened on the petri dish with my dog's saliva, which seemed to stay the same from day 2 to day 5. I believe that the limited microbe activity however might be attributed to the temperature not being warm enough, as it sat around 65 F for the duration of the experiment.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I took a sample from my dog's favorite dog toy after a day of playing fetch with it.  I thought it was really cool to watch the microbes grow each day with this sample.  Especially because the microbes grew out from the center of each circle, so I watched them progressively get larger and merge together.  I was surprised by the black circles that were in the center of some of microbial growths, especially because this coloration was not present in the other two samples I took (one from my dogs mouth, and one from a toy that was unused that day).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I examined the effectiveness of the one of the masks I am using during the current pandemic. Below are two samples the first is from the inside of my mouth and the other is from the outside of my mask after I had worn it for an hour. This experiment was very exiting for me because I got to test the effectiveness of the equipment I use daily. Both photos are from the third day of the experiment. as you can see my mouth had many more colonies than the outside of my mask. This suggests to me that my mask was doing its job!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The photo that I took was from the dish I had where I swabbed under my oven. I was actually really surprised because I thought that there would be a lot more but after four days I had no colonies and then only on the fifth and sixth days I began to see colonies form.</div>]]></description>
