Endless inventory

I somewhat agree with Ratliff's concept of endless inventory. He says in order to understand a musician or a group you need to listen to every single thing they have ever done. That could be all their albums and every single performance they have ever done. Ratliff used the example of a man who collected everything from "The Grateful Dead. The music changed throughout their history of performance which is interesting to see because he talks about their entire history including color coordinated tracks that span across the different styles of music they played. I think this is a legitimate thing to consider because he is looking at all their music. He is not looking at all of their performances which Ratliff says is required to completely understand a music group. That seems like a waste of time to me because you can understand their live music by one performance in each tour. I don't agree with the above and beyond listening. I really enjoy Genesis, and it has undergone many changes over the years that they played. Frankly, I did not like Genesis until Phil Collins came as their lead singer. I felt like their sound changed to progressive rock, and I love the emotion and sound in his voice. I don't care for their early single "The Silent Sun." Their Trespass album was a little closer to my tastes, but it still wasn't what I liked until the voice of Phil Collins joined into the mix. "The Musical Box" is the first song that I enjoy from their mix which finally has Phil Collins in the band. I can look at Genesis's music online and follow their history and not have to listen to every single performance they ever did. I can't find the use in doing that.

(referring to mapping out Grateful Dead's music history)"...that is love, and a kind of library science, but that is also listening. It is listening in the long view, with a basic understanding that the band's music only significant changes...that music represents one long discourse, all of it intrinsically valuable."(Ratliff, 115-116)
