The Road of trials for our future hero: Santiago is the process from him going to Africa and getting robbed as well as showing courage for not fearing what occurs to him as well as showing how to find signs of life in order to find the treasure that he wants. 

"You have to cross the entire Sahara Desert, and to do that, you need money. I need to know whether you have enough." 

"I had to test your courage, courage is the quality most essential to understanding the language"

But the sheep had taught him something even more important: that there was a language in the world that everyone understood, a language the boy that everyone understood, a language the boy had used through out the time that he was trying to improve things at the shop. It was the language of the enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of things of a search for something believed in and desired. This occurs in the story when Santiago is going across the desert for his treasure and the Alchemist told Santiago that he could transform himself into the wind and if he couldn't they would kill him and the alchemist.  He is then saved by the sun and the Universe himself.

"He is going to transform himself into the wind, just to demonstrate his powers. If he can't do so, he humbly offer you our lives, for the honor of your tribe."

"The boy reached through to the soul of the World, and saw that it was a part of the Soul of the God.
