Early Greeks did not have much contact with each other due to the rocky and mountainous terrain and because of this lack of contact they developed multiple ways of life. Ancient greeks became great sailors and seafarers because of their close proximity to water. The first city state in Greece was called Mycenae, it was run by monarchs who built the city state on a hill. Mycenae civilization collapsed in 1100 B.C. due to food shortage.
