I believe that letting students choose their own links can be tricky sometimes. Because once they find a link that is acceptable to use, they have to come to the teacher (most likely disrupting the teacher) and ask if it is okay to use the link. This takes time away from the student getting their assignment done. I believe that it is okay to have many planned links for the students to use for their research.

I think by the time you've started doing a research project or big paper they should have been taught which sources are good or bad. A whole lesson over how to research and which sites to stay away from is very important. But I personally would give them a few of good sites to you before letting them go on their own.

Personally in my classroom, I would give students links and let them choose one or two additional links they found on their own for them to use. I think having links chosen for them is right, but letting them find an educational and reliable link is a way of learning. In order for them to use the link, I would want to approve the link myself, and that will add extra work for me, but I think letting them have at least one link they found on their own would help them learn in the end.

However, providing the students with links will keep them on task and prevent students from using unreliable sources.
